About Lower Saxony
The Luxusvilla Bahrdorf finally revealed itself down a lane so narrow I had to breathe in to get the car through. It sits in the Wendland region of Lower Saxony, all timber framing and sensible German efficiency, surrounded by meadows that roll about like a green duvet someone forgot to straighten. We tumbled out, slightly feral from the journey, and immediately committed our first blunder. I had read the key instructions wrong. Not slightly wrong. Catastrophically wrong. The key was in a lockbox, yes, but not the lockbox I was presently jiggling like a confused burglar. That one belonged to the neighbour's garden shed. The neighbour, a splendid chap in rubber boots who emerged with a wheelbarrow, found this hilarious in that particularly German way where they don't actually laugh but you can tell they're storing it up for the pub. Proper key eventually located, we stepped inside and the chaos of the car evaporated. The villa has this marvellous trick of feeling enormous yet cosy, like a cathedral built by someone who really understood duvets. The children shot upstairs to claim bedrooms, which meant fifteen minutes of intense negotiation over who got the one with the balcony. My wife opened the patio doors and stood there, quite still, watching a hare lollop across the garden. I busied myself making tea with a kettle that looked like it had opinions, and promptly burned my thumb on a mug handle that was somehow hotter than the sun. Dinner that first evening was a triumph of lowered expectations. We'd stopped at a supermarket in Luchow, about ten minutes away, and bought everything that looked comforting. Bread, cheese, some wurst I couldn't pronounce, and a bottle of something local that the checkout woman approved of with a firm nod. We ate on the terrace as the light went soft and golden, the kind of evening that makes you forgive sat navs and burnt thumbs. The children, miraculously, were too tired to argue. My wife raised her glass and said simply, "We made it." I didn't mention the garden shed incident. Some victories are private. What struck me most that first day was the quiet. Not silence exactly - birds, distant tractors, the satisfying clink of my wife sorting kitchen things - but the absence of urgency. No emails demanding attention, no traffic hum, no sense of being somewhere merely to tick boxes. We were there to do very little, and the villa seemed built precisely for this purpose. The hot tub sat waiting, smug and bubbling. The garden stretched out invitingly towards hedgerows that probably concealed badgers with excellent social lives. I woke early the next morning, slightly disoriented by proper darkness having actually happened, and made coffee in that kitchen with its enormous island perfect for leaning on while contemplating nothing. Through the window, mist hung low over the fields and a heron flapped past like a grumpy vicar late for service. I thought about the journey, the wrong lockbox, the beet field. The small embarrassments that make a holiday properly yours rather than something sanitised from a brochure. By the time the others stirred, I had already decided we would walk to Bahrdorf village later, perhaps find the bakery, definitely not use the sat nav. Some lessons sink in slowly, but they do sink in. |
