About Lower Saxony
The mishap cost me forty minutes and a small piece of my pride. I had stopped for what I thought was a clever shortcut near Burhave, ignoring the main road signs in favour of what looked like a coastal path on my map. It turned out to be a cycling route. A very narrow cycling route. Reversing back past a group of German pensioners on electric bikes, all of whom waved cheerfully at my obvious distress, ranks among my more humbling travel experiences. By the time I actually found Haus Sorgenfrei, tucked neatly into its corner of Tossens proper, I was in that peculiar state of exhausted relief where everything seems slightly magical. The house itself appeared almost apologetic for my troubles, sitting there all tidy and welcoming with its typical North German coastal architecture. I half-expected it to offer me a cup of tea. What happened next shaped my entire holiday, though I did not know it then. Too rattled to properly plan, I abandoned my itinerary and simply walked. Tossens is not large, which I had initially considered a drawback. How wrong I was. Without my planned excursions to more distant spots, I started noticing things. The small bakery near the harbour where the woman behind the counter patiently taught me the German word for "seedy loaf" through a combination of charades and repeated pronunciation. The tiny beach access path between two houses that I would have missed had I been driving anywhere. The afternoon I spent watching shrimp boats from a bench I stumbled upon, apparently placed there by someone who understood the profound value of doing absolutely nothing in particular. The real discovery came on day three, when I got deliberately lost. I had developed enough confidence to cycle the flat coastal paths, and I took a turning that felt interesting rather than correct. This led me to a stretch of marshland I never found on any tourist map, somewhere between Tossens and Burhave. I heard the birds before I saw them, a proper cacophony of geese and waders making their various complaints. Standing there with my cheap bicycle and my inadequate jacket, watching the light change over the mudflats, I understood something I had been missing about holidays. I am terrible at doing nothing purposefully. I always need a destination, a ticked box, a justification. Getting lost had removed that option entirely. I found my way back eventually, though not before discovering a farm shop selling the most extraordinary smoked fish, apparently caught by the owner's brother. We established this through more charades, as my German remained stubbornly basic. I ate it on my little terrace at Haus Sorgenfrei, watching the sky do that flat coastal thing where it seems to stretch forever without any hills to interrupt it. The house itself became part of this accidental rhythm. I stopped treating it as a base for elsewhere and started noticing its own character. The way the morning light came through the kitchen window at a particular angle. The neighbour's cat who had opinions about my breakfast habits. The satisfying clunk of the front door that made me feel momentarily like a local rather than a visitor. On my final evening, I walked to the harbour without checking a map, taking turns that felt right rather than planned. I found a small group of locals fishing from the wall, and through a combination of broken German and goodwill, I learned which spots the flounder preferred. I caught nothing, which seemed entirely appropriate. The pensioner who had taken pity on me produced a thermos of surprisingly good coffee, and we watched the light fade together without much conversation. I left Lower Saxony with no dramatic photographs of famous landmarks, no checked boxes from guidebook recommendations. Just the memory of smoked fish eaten too quickly, of bicycle tracks through marshland, of a sat nav's betrayal that became the best thing about my holiday. Some places teach you their value slowly, through wrong turns and unplanned pauses. Haus Sorgenfrei and its surrounding corner of Tossens managed this without my permission, and I am genuinely grateful for the cows that started it all. |
