About Brandenburg
By the time I found the actual road again, I was forty minutes late, slightly sweaty, and in desperate need of the loo. The property itself sits in a quiet residential corner of Zerpenschleuse, a former fishing village that still has that slightly sleepy, end-of-the-road feeling. I spotted the house number finally, swung into the gravel drive with rather too much enthusiasm, and immediately realised I had parked blocking the neighbour's access. Cue a hasty repositioning while trying to look as though I absolutely meant to do that. The key collection involved a small lockbox, which sounds straightforward until you realise you are standing in full view of several twitching curtains, jabbing at a combination lock with fingers that have somehow lost all dexterity. I got there eventually, though I suspect the locals now think I was attempting a rather clumsy burglary. The door opened with a satisfying click, and I practically fell inside. First impressions, once I had calmed down and found the bathroom, were genuinely lovely. The place had that particular smell of a well-kept holiday let: clean but not sterile, with a faint hint of wood polish and something baking-related from a previous guest. The living area opened out through glass doors to a small terrace, and beyond that lay a garden that had clearly been loved by someone with more gardening patience than I will ever possess. A few late roses were still clinging on, and someone had left a small wooden bench positioned perfectly for afternoon dozing. I made myself a cup of tea using the kettle, which I had to locate first. This involved opening three wrong cupboards and one drawer full of tea towels before success. Standing on that terrace with my slightly too hot tea, watching a tractor rumble past in the distance, I felt the particular satisfaction of having arrived somewhere properly rural. The chaos of the journey fell away. Even the heron's judgmental face began to seem amusing rather than humiliating. The lake, Wandlitzer See, was apparently a short walk away, though I decided that exploration could wait until I had finished my tea and possibly had a small nap. The house had a comfortable, unpretentious atmosphere. Nothing was trying too hard to be stylish, yet everything worked and felt genuinely welcoming. I noticed a barbecue tucked in one corner of the terrace, and immediately planned a shopping trip for sausages and beer, because some holiday rituals are non-negotiable. That evening, I walked down to the water's edge as the light was fading. A few locals were fishing from small wooden platforms, and someone was walking an enormous dog that looked like it had never once experienced anxiety. I stood there feeling slightly ridiculous about my earlier sat-nav panic, reminded once again that the best holidays often begin with minor disasters. The water was perfectly still, reflecting the last of the sunset, and somewhere behind me a cow was making contented noises. I thought about my frantic reversing in the farm track, the lockbox struggle, the wrong cupboards. Then I laughed out loud, because honestly, what else can you do? |
