About Champagne Ardenne
I should have known the Sat Nav was plotting against me the moment it confidently directed us down what I can only describe as a glorified tractor path. There we were, two hours from Calais, beetling through Champagne-Ardenne in our overloaded hatchback, when the voice of doom announced we had "reached our destination." We had, in fact, reached a field of surprisingly unimpressed-looking Charolais cattle.

My partner gave me that look. You know the one. The look that says, "You promised this would be straightforward." I had, rather foolishly, boasted about my navigational prowess after successfully locating the wine aisle in our local supermarket. This was different. This involved actual coordinates and French road numbering, which I am now convinced was designed by someone with a vendetta against British drivers.

After twenty minutes of increasingly tense reversing and one spectacularly failed three-point turn that nearly deposited us in a drainage ditch, we found the actual entrance to our Charnois. The property sat at the end of a proper gravel drive, flanked by those immaculate Champagne hedgerows that look as though they've been trimmed with nail scissors. The house itself was a proper stone-built affair, all gentle wear and regional character, the sort of place that makes you immediately regret every modern housing estate you've ever admired.

I was still flustered from our agricultural detour and managed to trip over absolutely nothing while retrieving our bags from the boot. My partner caught the wine bottle I launched towards the gravel with the reflexes of a parent saving a toddler from itself. We stood there, slightly sweating, slightly bickering, very much not the composed travellers one imagines arriving at a French country property.

The key safe code worked first time, which felt like a minor miracle given our run of fortune. Pushing open the heavy wooden door, we were hit by that particular stillness of a house that's been waiting. Not emptiness, exactly, but patience. The entrance hall smelled faintly of stone and something herbal, perhaps lavender from a previous guest's efforts. I noticed my shoulders dropping for the first time since Dover.

The kitchen revealed itself first, all practical terracotta tiles and a wooden table that had clearly hosted decades of breakfasts. I ran my hand along its surface and felt the slight undulations where countless elbows had rested. My partner had already located the coffee maker and was making those hopeful investigative noises that precede caffeine discovery.

I wandered through to the sitting room, where French windows framed a view I hadn't prepared for. Rolling vineyard country, patchwork fields, the kind of landscape that makes you feel briefly poetic and then slightly embarrassed about it. The furniture was proper solid stuff, nothing showy, the sort of pieces that accumulate meaning through use rather than price tags. I caught myself standing there with my mouth slightly open, still holding my coat, still slightly muddy from my earlier stumble.

The mishaps of arrival had stripped away any pretence of sophisticated traveller. We were just two slightly dishevelled Brits, smelling faintly of cattle encounter and stress, standing in someone else's beautiful house in rural France. And perhaps that's exactly the right way to arrive somewhere like this. No polish, no performance, just the slightly ridiculous truth of the journey and the quiet reward of having finally, actually, against reasonable odds, made it.

I put my coat down properly. My partner handed me a coffee in a chipped mug that felt exactly right. Through the window, the Charolais cattle were nowhere to be seen, presumably still judging other lost tourists somewhere across the hills.
