About Aquitaine
Three hours, two arguments about whose fault it was, and one deeply questionable service station sandwich later, we finally crawled into Parentis-en-Born. The pine forests of the Landes region had been closing in around us for miles, all sandy soil and towering maritime pines that made everything smell like a fancy candle shop. I kept waiting for the sat nav voice to return, then remembered. Right. Kitchen table. We found the turning eventually, a narrow track through the trees that had me convinced I'd misread the directions. The cottage appeared like something from a slightly rustic dream, all wooden cladding and a terrace that looked out towards one of those whisper-quiet lakes this corner of Aquitaine does so well. Parentis Lake, apparently, though at that moment I couldn't have told you my own middle name. The key was exactly where promised, which felt like a minor miracle given my organisational track record that day. I fumbled with the lock while my youngest announced she needed the toilet with the urgency only a six-year-old can muster. The door swung open and we practically fell inside, bags and bodies and bottled-up motorway energy spilling across the threshold. First impressions? Wood everywhere. Proper wood, not that laminate nonsense. The place smelled of pine resin and something else, something clean and foreign and immediately relaxing. The living area opened straight onto that terrace through sliding doors, and I caught my first proper glimpse of the water through the trees, grey-green and still in the late afternoon light. My wife actually gasped, which she hasn't done since I proposed, and that was mostly relief. The kitchen was compact but purposeful, the sort of space that forces you to cooperate rather than perform. I could already picture morning coffee chaos, elbows bumping, someone burning toast while another hunted for the jam. The bedrooms were simple, almost stubbornly unpretentious, with windows that framed pine branches rather than pretentious views. Perfect, in other words. I unpacked the wine we'd grabbed at a supermarket somewhere near Mont-de-Marsan, basic red, nothing special. Found a corkscrew on the third attempt. We sat on that terrace as the light softened, watching a heron flap lazily across the lake, listening to nothing much at all. The kids discovered a board game cupboard and proceeded to argue over Monopoly rules in the background, which somehow became part of the soundtrack rather than an interruption. That first evening, I burned the sausages on the barbecue. Obviously. The local butcher's finest, destined for charcoal. We ate them anyway, with baguette that shattered everywhere and salad I'd forgotten to dress. It was magnificent. The mishaps, the motorway chaos, the sat nav sitting uselessly in Surrey, it all compressed into something approaching contentment. I keep chasing perfect holidays, I suppose, some Instagram fantasy where everyone smiles in coordinated outfits. This wasn't that. This was better. This was pine needles in your flip-flops and sand in the bed sheets and realising you've packed twelve socks but no swimming trunks for your son. This was proper family chaos, French style, and I couldn't wait for more of it. |
