About Aquitaine
The mishap came within seconds of parking. I flung open the car door with the enthusiasm of a man who had been sitting for far too long, directly into a stone wall that I absolutely should have seen. The door bounced back, I yelped, and my other half simply looked at me with that particular expression she has perfected over fifteen years together. The one that says, without words, that this is somehow her life now. The dent was small. The dent, I maintain, added character. The wall was entirely unbothered, which felt personal. Our holiday home was one of those traditional Basque properties with the distinctive white walls and timber framing, the kind that looks impossibly picturesque in photographs and somehow manages to look even better in person. I had worried it would feel too polished, too obviously set up for tourists, but the first thing I noticed was the smell of woodsmoke from somewhere nearby and the absolute silence beyond it. No traffic hum, no distant motorway. Just birds and, I later realised, an extremely vocal cockerel from a neighbouring farm who clearly took his announcing duties very seriously. Getting inside was its own comedy. I had the key code written on my phone, on a scrap of paper, and supposedly memorised. All three sources failed me simultaneously. I stood there in the late afternoon sun, sweating through the shirt I had been wearing since Southampton, trying combinations while my partner unloaded cases with increasing theatricality. When the door finally clicked open, I may have announced it with slightly too much triumph, as if I had personally built the place. The interior stopped me properly. Exposed beams, a kitchen that actually looked designed for cooking rather than posing, and windows that framed the surrounding hills like deliberate paintings. I had prepared myself for disappointment, for the gap between glossy website photos and grubby reality. Instead I stood there feeling unexpectedly moved, which I masked by immediately claiming the bedroom with the better view and pretending this had been democratically decided. We unpacked badly, too tired to organise properly, so our cases vomited clothes across every surface. I found wine glasses and opened the bottle we had bought at a supermarket somewhere near Biarritz, reasoning that we had earned it through sheer endurance. We sat on the terrace as the light changed, that particular golden hour that seems to last longer in southern France, and watched the cockerel make his final pronouncements of the day. I thought about the dented car door, the argument, my useless sense of direction. I thought about how I always imagine holidays beginning smoothly, elegantly, and how they never do. The chaos felt fitting now. This place demanded nothing polished from us. It simply waited, patient and solid, while we stumbled our way into relaxation. The Pyrenees loomed faintly in the distance, promising walks I would almost certainly complain about once we attempted them. That first evening, we did nothing remarkable. Ate bread and cheese, drank more wine than planned, listened to unfamiliar birds. I felt the particular loosening that comes from knowing you have nowhere to be tomorrow, no schedule beyond whatever you invent. The cockerel started up again at dawn, naturally, and I woke smiling despite myself. |
