About Zealand
The cottage sat at the end of a gravel track on Sjaellands Odde, that narrow finger of land pointing out into the Kattegat. I had been dreaming of this for months. A week of doing absolutely nothing. No museums, no historic towns, no "popping to Copenhagen for the day." Just me, a stack of books, and the slow rhythm of a garden that had clearly been enjoying itself without any human interference whatsoever. The key was under a flowerpot, which felt pleasingly illicit. The door stuck slightly, then gave way with a sigh. Inside smelled of pine and something faintly maritime, that particular scent of holiday cottages everywhere that somehow never gets replicated by air freshener companies. I dumped my bag in the hallway and went straight through to the back, shoving open the French doors with the urgency of a man who had earned his inertia. The garden was a revelation. Not manicured, not designed, just quietly abundant. A wooden table sat beneath a tree I later learned was a rowan, its branches doing a lazy dance in the breeze. Beyond the fence, I could see the glint of water through a tangle of wild rose and hawthorn. Somewhere a gull complained about something. I pulled out a chair, sat down heavily, and felt something in my shoulders that had been clenched since approximately March finally release. I did not move for three hours. This became the pattern. Mornings found me in the garden with coffee cooling beside me, a paperback propped against a salt cellar, reading the same paragraph repeatedly because the light on the water kept distracting me. The cottage had a small kitchen that I used minimally. Bread, cheese, the occasional tomato from a farm shop I walked to when the guilt of total sloth became briefly overwhelming. I would return with my purchases, triumphant as an explorer, then immediately resume my position at the table. There was a beach, I discovered on day three. A ten-minute amble through scrub and down a sandy path. I went once, nodded at its existence, and retreated to my garden chair where the sand stayed politely on the other side of the fence. The point was not to accumulate experiences. The point was to stop accumulating altogether. On day five I attempted to read in the hammock. This ended with me on the grass, book splayed, laughing at my own incompetence with fabric-based leisure. I lay there for a while, looking up at leaves moving against sky, and thought about how rarely I allowed myself to be this pointless. How the ferry mishap had been a warning, really. I was out of practice at being slow. The week ended as it had begun, with me in that garden chair, now slightly more weathered, watching evening come in from the east across the water. My unread books sat in a satisfying pile. I had walked perhaps four miles in total. Spoken to maybe six people. The rowan tree had dropped a few berries onto the table, and I had not brushed them off. Driving back to the ferry, I took the bollards wide. Some lessons stick. |
