About Zealand
The real comedy began when I finally reached the holiday home. I stepped out of the car, stretched my legs, and promptly tripped over a small wooden step I had failed to notice. My suitcase went flying, my phone skittered across the gravel, and I performed an involuntary dance that would have embarrassed me at a wedding. A neighbour watering her window boxes paused to observe this performance. I gave her a thumbs up. She smiled and returned to her geraniums with the tact of someone who had also once been a chaotic holidaymaker. The property itself sat quietly among trees, a proper Danish summer house with that particular Scandinavian knack for looking both modest and somehow exactly right. Red wooden walls, white trim around the windows, a small deck facing towards the water. After my ungraceful arrival, I stood there for a moment simply breathing in the smell of pine and sea air. The chaos of the journey began to feel like a small price to pay. Inside, the place had that wonderful holiday home smell of clean linen and slightly aged wood. I made the classic mistake of immediately trying to work out every appliance before unpacking, which meant I spent ten minutes pressing buttons on what I thought was the oven but was actually some kind of auxiliary heater. The actual oven sat smugly in the corner, waiting for me to notice it. I laughed out loud at my own foolishness, alone in a strange kitchen, and something about that moment felt rather freeing. The living area opened onto that deck through wide glass doors, and I kept finding myself drawn to look out at the water. Havnso itself is one of those Danish harbour villages that does not shout for attention. Small boats bobbed at their moorings. A few people wandered along the shore path with the unhurried pace of folk who know they have nowhere particular to be. I envied them their composure. By late afternoon I had managed to unpack, locate the proper oven, and make myself a cup of tea that tasted better than any tea had a right to. I sat on the deck with my still-slightly-gravel-scuffed phone and watched the light change over the water. The neighbour's geraniums glowed pink in the evening sun. Somewhere a dog barked, then stopped, satisfied. My first evening, I walked the short distance down to the harbour itself, passing modest wooden houses with well-tended gardens. Denmark does this so well, this balance between community and privacy, between caring for your patch and not making a fuss about it. I bought bread and cheese from a small shop near the water, feeling absurdly pleased with myself for managing such a simple transaction in my terrible Danish. The shopkeeper was kind enough to pretend she had understood me. Walking back with my modest provisions, I thought about how often I arrive somewhere new with my shoulders up around my ears, convinced the small disasters mean something significant. The wrong turn, the stumble, the confused oven. They are just the tax we pay for getting anywhere at all. That first night, I slept better than I had in weeks, lulled by the particular silence of a place where water and woodland meet. I woke to grey Danish morning light and the sound of rain beginning against the windows. Rather than disappointment, I felt something close to relief. A proper excuse to do very little, to drink more tea, to watch the weather move across the bay. The holiday had truly begun. |
