I should have known the Danish spring would have the last laugh. The owner, a wiry chap called Henrik, emerged from the barn with a wheelbarrow and the resigned expression of someone who has watched countless British tourists learn about Danish weather the hard way. He didn't laugh, not outright, but his eyes crinkled in a way that suggested this was a well-worn seasonal tradition. "You have brought the English weather with you," he said, which I gather is the highest form of Danish humour. He pointed out the mudroom with its ranks of wellies in every size, the drying cupboard that hummed with practical efficiency, the wood-burning stove already stacked with birch logs. The house, he explained, had been in his family since the 1880s, and they had long since stopped fighting the seasons and simply arranged themselves around them instead.

This philosophy revealed itself everywhere I looked. The thick thatched sections on the older outbuildings, the deep window sills designed for pots of herbs that wouldn't survive outside yet, the way the kitchen faced south to catch every reluctant hour of spring light. Our bedroom had a window seat piled with wool blankets in that particular muted palette of Danish design, oatmeal and soft grey and the colour of dried lavender, all waiting for someone to wrap themselves up and watch the weather perform its daily indecision.

I spent that first evening doing exactly that, actually. The hail returned around six o'clock, then a rainbow appeared over the neighbouring pasture where three elderly sheep stood like grumpy spectators. I felt the particular foolishness of the urban traveller who packs for "Europe in spring" as if that were a single coherent concept. Henrik had left us a bottle of local apple wine and a note about the best walking routes once the ground firmed up, which he estimated might happen by Thursday if we were lucky. By nightfall, with the stove crackling and my damp clothes steaming gently in the cupboard, I found myself unexpectedly content. The spring had humbled me, soaked me, and shown me the particular rhythm of this corner of Zealand, where patience is not a virtue but simply a practical necessity. I had arrived expecting to impose my schedule on the place. Instead, Ellinge Lyng and its capricious Danish spring had gently imposed themselves on me, and I was already warmer for it.
