About Zealand
I had convinced myself that driving from Copenhagen to Bisserup Strand would be a doddle. Two hours, tops, I told my partner, waving my phone about with the confidence of someone who had briefly glanced at Google Maps three days prior. Three and a half hours later, we were still circling a roundabout near Slagelse for the second time, our boot full of overpriced airport sandwiches and my pride rapidly deflating. The satnav had apparently decided we needed a scenic tour of every agricultural supply shop in western Zealand. By the time we spotted the little wooden sign for the cottage, I was ready to abandon the car and live off foraged berries.

The key was under a flowerpot, which felt deliciously illicit, and I spent a good five minutes trying to open the wrong door before realising there was, in fact, a front door. My partner filmed this for posterity. I have not been allowed to forget it.

But then we stepped inside, and something peculiar happened. The world slowed down. Not in that forced, mindfulness-app way, but properly, like someone had gently applied a handbrake to the entire afternoon. The cottage had that particular Scandinavian stillness to it - light pouring through windows that looked out onto a garden already going slightly wild around the edges, the kind of garden that has given up on being impressive and is simply enjoying itself. I found myself standing in the kitchen, holding a mug I had not consciously made, staring at a bumblebee the size of a conker working its way through some valerian.

We had brought books. This was my partner's idea, and I had been sceptical, having not properly read anything since approximately 2019 that was not attached to a work email. Mine was a detective novel of staggering mediocrity. I read the entire thing in two days, sprawled on a deckchair that creaked ominously whenever I shifted position. The plot made no sense whatsoever. I loved every page.

The garden became our universe. There was a patch of grass that caught the morning sun, and I developed an almost religious devotion to sitting in it with coffee, watching the light move across the clover. We found a hammock strung between two birch trees, slightly saggy, and took turns napping in it with the undignified enthusiasm of toddlers. I discovered that doing absolutely nothing requires a surprising amount of practice. The first day, I kept reaching for my phone, checking emails that were not urgent, inventing tasks. By day three, I had genuinely forgotten what day it was and had to check by looking at the bin collection schedule on the fridge.

There was a small path down to the water, though "path" suggests more intention than the actual slightly muddy track deserved. We wandered down once, twice, then stopped bothering. The garden was enough. The garden was everything. We ate outside even when it was technically too cold, wrapping ourselves in blankets and grilling mediocre sausages that tasted magnificent. I became briefly obsessed with a family of sparrows who had colonised a hedge near the compost bin, and spent an embarrassing amount of time trying to photograph them with a phone camera entirely unsuited to the task.

On our last morning, I woke early and sat in that patch of morning sun with my final cup of terrible instant coffee, watching the garden do absolutely nothing in particular, and felt something I could only describe as contentment, which is not a word I would have associated with myself before this week. My partner found me there an hour later, still in my pyjamas, still holding the empty mug, and did not say a word. Some things do not need explaining.
