About West Jutland
I should have known the holiday was going to be characterful when I put the wrong postcode into the sat nav and ended up in someone's farmyard just outside Ringkobing, staring at a very patient man who was clearly wondering why a British family in a Volvo estate had come to inspect his pig sheds. My Danish stretches to "tak" and "ol" so our conversation was mostly gestures and apologetic grimaces, but he was good enough to point me toward the actual coast with a laugh that suggested this happened more often than you'd think.

The proper road to Vederso Klit revealed itself eventually, a narrow strip threading through heather and sand dunes that seemed to shift in the wind like something alive. The cottage sat where the land finally surrendered to the North Sea, a modest wooden place with weathered cladding that had clearly seen its share of Atlantic gales. I was still laughing at my own incompetence when I met the first of what would become a small cast of memorable locals.

Bent was showing the next-door neighbour how to mend a fishing net when I arrived, his fingers working the twine with the absent-minded speed of fifty years' practice. He'd been coming to Vester Husby since before I was born, he told me, and his family had a place three doors down. Within minutes he'd established that I knew nothing about fishing, even less about Danish coastal weather patterns, and that my children would definitely want to borrow his grandson's old surfboard. He insisted on this last point despite my protestations that my youngest was afraid of paddling pools.

The key handover came from Lene, who managed the property with the brisk efficiency of someone who had dealt with every possible holidaymaker mishap and was not about to be surprised by mine. She walked me through the heating system with the gravity of a surgeon explaining a procedure, paused to admire the pig shed story, and then mentioned almost casually that the baker's van came Tuesdays and Thursdays but you had to flag him down or he'd assume you were asleep. "He is a man who respects sleep," she said, with what I eventually realised was dry humour.

That first evening I walked to the beach through the pine plantation behind the cottages, the sand soft underfoot and the light doing that extraordinary flat Scandinavian thing where everything seems slightly unreal. An older woman was collecting driftwood with a wheelbarrow, methodical as a beachcomber in a storybook. She spoke no English and I no Danish, but we established through pointing and smiles that I was staying in "the blue house" and that she thought the weather would turn by Thursday. She was called Inge, Bent later told me, and she'd been gathering firewood here since her husband died. "She says the wood tastes better from the sea," he said, which I chose to believe was a translation issue rather than Danish culinary practice.

By the time I fell into bed that first night, sand in my shoes and slightly overwhelmed by unsolicited kindness, I understood something I hadn't expected. The place itself was lovely, all raw coastline and that particular silence of dunes and distant sea. But what had already anchored it in my memory was the easy, unhurried way people had of claiming you, however briefly, as part of their landscape. I had arrived a bumbling tourist who couldn't operate a sat nav. I was already, somehow, the person in the blue house whose children needed a surfboard and who should remember to wave down the baker. It felt like being gently adopted by a place that had seen thousands like me come and go, and had decided long ago that there was no particular rush to be anything other than itself.
