About West Jutland
I'd driven us halfway across Jutland before I realised the sat nav had been trying to dump us in a field outside Ringkobing for the past twenty minutes. My wife sat there with that particular expression she saves for my navigational confidence, while our youngest announced from the back that she needed a wee "right now, not in a minute, Daddy." Classic start to a family break, that. We eventually found the proper turning by spotting another lost-looking Volvo with UK plates doing an awkward three-point turn.

The Klegod cottage sat back from a quiet lane, all timber cladding and sensible Danish understatement. I had this romantic notion of sweeping up the gravel drive like some sort of hygge advert, but instead I mounted the kerb slightly, scattering a family of sparrows and earning another look from the passenger seat. The key was in the lockbox exactly where the instructions said, which felt like a minor triumph given my track record with such things.

Stepping inside was that lovely moment of holiday cottage discovery. Slightly too warm, that particular smell of wood and cleaning products and someone else's curtains. Our eldest immediately claimed the loft bedroom with the dramatic urgency of a child who has never once in her life needed to use a bathroom at 3am. The rest of us trooped about, opening cupboards with the nosiness of people who absolutely would never snoop in someone else's house normally, honest. I found the coffee maker and felt genuinely emotional about it.

The mishap came when I attempted the patio doors. There was a trick to them, apparently, some specific Scandinavian mechanism that required a lift-and-slide motion I couldn't master. I heaved, I pulled, I possibly swore quietly. My wife tried. The children tried, mostly by hanging off the handle and adding nothing useful. A neighbour two cottages down definitely saw me. I waved with the desperate cheerfulness of a man pretending everything was precisely as intended. Eventually I discovered a secondary locking pin I'd been ignoring, and the door slid open with such smooth ease that it felt personally mocking.

That first evening, we walked the couple of minutes to the beach at Klegod Strand. The North Sea was doing its grey, purposeful thing, and the wind had that proper West Jutland character, the kind that rearranges your hair and your thoughts simultaneously. The children ran about collecting shells and bits of smoothed glass with the intensity of archaeologists on a significant dig. I stood there with my hands in my pockets feeling that particular shift that happens on holiday, where the ordinary stuff of your life loosens its grip just slightly.

Back at the cottage, we cooked a basic pasta situation using the slightly eccentric collection of pans left by previous guests. Someone had definitely attempted a fry-up in the big one; you could tell by the seasoned patina of it, a silent fellowship of holiday cooks across the years. The children squabbled about seating arrangements. Someone spilled juice. It was absolutely nothing special, and absolutely exactly what we needed.

I keep thinking about that stuck door, though. How I stood there wrestling with it, convinced I was doing everything right, missing the obvious thing because I was too busy performing competence. There's probably something in that about holidays generally, about letting go of the notion that you're meant to be in control of everything. Or perhaps it's just that Danish patio doors are different and I should read instructions more carefully. Either way, the sea air sorted me out, and the coffee maker never once let me down.
