About West Jutland
The journey from Esbjerg to Bjerregard took us through flat, windswept farmland that looked like it had been ironed by a giant with a very heavy hand. West Jutland does not do hills. It does horizon, and lots of it. We passed endless fields of something green and sensible, the occasional red-roofed farmhouse, and wind turbines doing their slow, hypnotic dance. I kept pointing at birds I couldn't identify. My partner kept saying "yes, dear" in that particular tone. The sat-nav had been optimistic about the final stretch. The tarmac gave way to gravel, which gave way to something I can only describe as "gravel's less ambitious cousin." Our little hire car bottomed out twice. I may have said something unprintable. My partner may have reminded me that I was the one who'd insisted we didn't need the extra insurance. Then we saw it. The holiday home sat among low dunes, weathered wood blending into the landscape like it had grown there. A proper Danish summer house, all angles and large windows and that particular Scandinavian confidence that says, "Yes, we know what we're doing with timber." The key was in the lockbox, which I managed to open on the third attempt while holding the phone torch in my mouth and muttering about modern technology. The door swung open and the smell hit us first. That clean, woody scent of a place that's been shut up for a while, mixed with something faintly coastal. We stepped inside and immediately performed that little dance couples do in new spaces - me trying to find light switches in illogical places, my partner making straight for the kitchen to test the kettle. Priorities. I will confess something now. I had packed for "coastal Denmark in summer" with what I can only describe as misplaced optimism. The reality was wind. Persistent, opinionated wind that rattled the windows and made the dune grass outside perform frantic little bows. I stood in the living room in my inadequate jacket, watching the North Sea do its grey, churning thing in the distance, and understood that I had fundamentally misunderstood the assignment. The house itself, though, was a revelation. Proper Danish design, all clean lines and surprising storage solutions. We opened every cupboard, as you do, and found board games with Danish instructions, candles in alarming quantities, and a vacuum cleaner that looked like it had been designed by someone who genuinely cared about the user experience. The windows were enormous, framing the raw landscape like paintings that changed by the hour. My moment of reflection came while standing barefoot on the heated bathroom floor, which I maintain is one of civilisation's genuine achievements. I thought about the wing mirror, the gravel track, the wrong clothes, the general chaos of our arrival. And I thought: this is exactly why we do it. The unscripted bits, the small humiliations, the wind that doesn't care about your packing choices. The house felt earned, somehow. More ours because we'd fumbled our way to it. My partner appeared in the doorway with two cups of tea and the observation that I'd been staring at a sand dune for several minutes. We sat on the wide wooden deck, wrapped in blankets we'd found in a cupboard, and watched the light do something extraordinary across the water. The wind still blew. It would always blow. That was rather the point. |
