They blazed against the greying sky in shades of rust and amber, and the ground beneath them lay thick with fallen leaves that crunched satisfyingly underfoot. Our little wooden holiday home peeked through this display like something from a particularly earnest Christmas card, all clean Danish lines and sensible windows.

I will confess something here. I had worried that October would feel like a consolation prize, a holiday taken too late in the year when all the proper summer people had gone home. Standing on the small deck with a cup of tea that steamed visibly in the cooling air, watching my breath mingle with the afternoon light, I understood how wrong I had been.
