About South Jutland
The trouble began, as most of my troubles do, with overconfidence and a poorly folded map. My partner had entrusted me with navigation duties while they focused on not driving on the wrong side of the road, a task I had dramatically underestimated. I had spotted a sign for Kelstrup and immediately commanded a left turn with the authority of a ship's captain spotting land. What I had actually spotted was Kelstrup Bakke, an entirely different settlement some three miles inland, and we spent the next twenty minutes winding through farmland while I made increasingly unconvincing claims about "scenic routes." By the time we found the actual coastal road, my credibility was in tatters and our hire car contained the tense atmosphere of a divorce proceeding. Then came the second mishap, which I shall call The Satnav Rebellion. Just as we finally glimpsed the sea, the device decided we were somewhere in the North Sea and began frantically recalculating, spinning the map like a roulette wheel. I tried to intervene manually, accidentally switching the language to Danish, which neither of us speaks beyond "tak" and the names of pastries. We found the house purely by accident, spotting the NOVASOL sign as I performed what I will generously term a "three-point turn" in a gravel driveway that turned out to belong to a very patient local walking his dog. He watched the entire manoeuvre without expression, which in Danish terms I believe constitutes extreme embarrassment on my behalf. The house itself stopped all bickering instantly. It sat among low dunes with that particular Scandinavian modesty, weathered wood and large windows that somehow looked both unassuming and exactly right. The key was in the lockbox as promised, though retrieving it required me to perform an undignified squat in the porch light while my partner made unhelpful observations about my reading glasses. Inside smelled of pine and salt, that impossible combination that immediately unties whatever knot has formed in your shoulders. The living area opened toward the sea through glass doors, and even in the fading evening light we could see the strand stretching in both directions, that particular flatness of the South Jutland coast where the sky seems to occupy three-quarters of the world. I walked straight into the coffee table while admiring this view, which my partner found disproportionately amusing and which I chose to interpret as the house's way of humbling me after my navigational swagger. The kitchen was compact and alarmingly well-organised, the kind that makes you conscious of your own domestic inadequacies. I opened cupboards with the caution of a burglar, half-expecting everything to be labelled in that efficient Danish manner. The bedrooms were simple, white-walled, with the slight creak of floorboards that speaks of genuine age rather than impending collapse. Ours looked directly toward the water, and I stood there like a fool with my bag still on my shoulder, watching the last light turn the shallows silver. My partner found me twenty minutes later, still standing, having unpacked nothing. They did not comment on this, which I appreciated. Some moments of arrival are too fragile for commentary. The house had already begun its work, the particular alchemy of a place that knows exactly what it is, where the North Sea has been shaping the shore long before your petty navigational disasters and will continue long after. |
