About South Jutland
I should have known the Sat Nav was up to no good the moment it tried to send me through a field of very unimpressed-looking sheep. There we were, my partner and I, bouncing along what I optimistically called a "lane" and what she correctly identified as "someone's driveway," both of us convinced that Kelstrup must be just around the next bend. It was not. It was, in fact, three more wrong turns, one heated debate about whether to trust technology or instinct, and a brief but humiliating reverse manoeuvre past a man on a tractor who definitely found the whole thing funnier than we did.

By the time we actually found the place, I was in that peculiar state of frazzled determination where you will absolutely not admit you are lost, even as you pull up to a house you have clearly never seen before and announce, "Here we are then," as if you planned every moment of the chaos.

The cottage sat there looking impossibly Danish and impossibly calm, all pale wood and sensible windows, surrounded by nothing but grass and sky and that particular South Jutland stillness that makes you suddenly aware of how loudly you have been breathing. We tumbled out of the car, stretched various limbs that had seized up during our accidental tour of the local countryside, and immediately discovered that I had packed the keys in my rucksack, which was buried under the suitcase, which was wedged behind the cool bag, which contained a wheel of cheese that had definitely seen better days.

My partner stood on the gravel, arms crossed, watching me perform what I can only describe as an unflattering interpretive dance around the car. "Very efficient," she said, in that tone that manages to be supportive and deeply amused simultaneously.

When I finally located the keys, I made a great show of unlocking the door with theatrical precision, as if this had been the plan all along. The door swung open and we were hit by that particular holiday-cottage smell: clean, slightly woody, with the faintest suggestion that someone had recently been very thorough with a lemon-scented something. It was instantly comforting, the olfactory equivalent of someone handing you a cup of tea after a minor disaster.

The first thing I noticed was the light. South Jutland does not mess about with light when it decides to be generous, and the living room was flooded with it, bouncing off pale floors and making everything feel rather more spacious and rather more Scandinavian than our usual surroundings. I wandered through in that dazed way you do after a long drive, touching surfaces, opening cupboard doors for no reason, making appreciative noises that required no response.

My partner had already found the kitchen and was conducting her standard inspection: kettle located, mugs assessed, fridge opened and closed with satisfaction. "There's actual coffee," she called out, as if this were a personal victory. Given our morning, it felt like one.

I stepped outside onto the little terrace, still clutching my rucksack like a security blanket, and finally allowed myself to absorb where we actually were. Fields stretched out in that flat, honest way they do in this part of Denmark, not dramatic or showy, just quietly present. Somewhere in the distance, a bird made a noise I could not identify. The cheese wheel sat forgotten in the car, probably plotting its revenge.

We had arrived, finally and properly, and I felt that particular shift that happens when travel chaos gives way to something steadier. The Sat Nav had not defeated us. The sheep had not judged us too harshly. The man on the tractor had, I suspected, already forgotten our existence. We were here, in this calm little house, with a whole stretch of South Jutland waiting to be slowly and properly discovered.

My partner appeared beside me with two mugs of coffee, one of which she pressed into my hands with the quiet authority of someone who knows exactly what is needed. We stood there, slightly squinting in the afternoon light, neither of us saying much, both of us thinking more or less the same thing: that sometimes the messiest arrivals make the best beginnings, and that perhaps I should learn to read a map.
