About South Jutland
I have always believed that the best holidays begin with a small disaster, and our trip to Kegnaes Strand in South Jutland proved me absolutely right. The drive from the ferry at Rodbyhavn had been surprisingly pleasant, all flat fields and big skies, until I confidently turned onto what I insisted was a "scenic shortcut" and found myself on a gravel track between two muddy pig farms. My partner sat in silence, which I have learned is worse than shouting. By the time we reached the holiday home, I was ready to abandon the car and possibly myself in the nearest fjord.

The property sat among low dunes with the sort of understated Danish charm that makes you feel instantly inadequate about your own decorating choices. Clean lines, pale wood, enormous windows facing the water. I was still marvelling at this when I attempted to carry three bags, a cool box, and my coat through the front door in one ambitious trip. The coat caught the handle, the cool box caught my knee, and I performed what I can only describe as a slow-motion collapse onto the decking, scattering apples and a very personal bottle of schnapps across the boards. A woman walking her dog on the beach path stopped to watch. We waved. She did not wave back.

Inside, the place smelled of pine and salt, that particular coastal scent that immediately lowers your blood pressure. Unless, of course, you have just noticed that the schnapps bottle has cracked and is leaking onto your last clean pair of trousers. My partner dealt with this with the kind of patient sigh that comes from years of practice, while I stood in the kitchen feeling like a particularly useless piece of luggage.

The kitchen itself was typically Danish, which is to say it looked like a design magazine and I was afraid to touch anything. Everything had its place. Everything was white or pale grey. I opened a cupboard looking for a glass and found what appeared to be a scientifically organised system of containers that I was clearly too chaotic to deserve. I poured water from the tap, which tasted better than the bottled stuff at home, and stood at the window watching the light change over the water.

The living area opened onto that deck where I had so recently embarrassed myself, and I stepped back out more carefully this time. The beach was proper South Jutland territory, not sandy in the postcard sense but wilder, with marram grass and low tide pools and that particular grey-brown palette that Danish painters seem to love. A few small boats sat on the horizon. The dog walker had mercifully disappeared.

I should mention the heating system, because nothing says "holiday" like spending twenty minutes trying to work out why you are simultaneously too hot and too cold. The underfloor heating had controls that looked like they belonged on a spacecraft. I pressed something, heard a click, and a vent in the bathroom began making a noise like a disappointed whale. My partner took over. I went to inspect the bedrooms.

They were simple, bright, with that particular Scandinavian ability to make sparse feel cosy rather than cold. The beds had those thin European duvets that I never trust until I have actually slept under one. I opened the wardrobe and found a spare blanket folded with geometric precision that I dared not disturb. I closed it again, feeling judged by fabric.

By evening, the mishaps had settled into something almost fond. The schnapps was salvaged into a mug. The apples were rinsed and mostly edible. We sat on the deck with supermarket rugbrod and some surprisingly good herring, watching the light fade slowly over Als Sund. The disappointed whale had quietened to a gentle hum. I realised, with the kind of clarity that only comes after mild humiliation, that this was exactly why we had come. Not for perfection, but for the particular peace that follows when you stop trying to control everything and simply let the flat fields and big skies do their work.

The dog walker passed again in the morning. This time, I was fully dressed and carrying coffee rather than scattered produce. She nodded. I counted it as progress.
