About Odsherred
The cottage sat at the end of a gravel track that my car definitely did not appreciate. I had visions of a gentle coastal approach, perhaps some tasteful seabirds welcoming us. Instead we got a cloud of dust, a suspicious goose, and the realisation that I had packed approximately fourteen pairs of socks but no washing-up liquid. My partner gave me that look. You know the one. The "you said you checked the list" look. I had checked the list. I had just checked it badly. The key was exactly where the email said it would be, which felt like a small miracle given my navigational performance. The front door stuck slightly, needing a shoulder and a muttered apology, and then we were in. The first thing that hit me was the smell of pine and salt air, that particular Scandinavian combination that makes you feel instantly cleaner somehow. The second thing was the absolute silence. Not awkward silence. The proper kind. No traffic, no neighbours arguing about recycling, just the distant sound of water and what I later learned was a very committed woodpecker. I immediately made a fool of myself by attempting to light the wood-burning stove using what I can only describe as misplaced confidence. There is a particular humiliation in failing at fire-making as a grown adult. My partner, who had been suspiciously quiet, produced a box of long matches from a drawer I had somehow missed and had it roaring in minutes. I chose to interpret this as teamwork rather than rescue. The kitchen was compact in that efficient Danish way where everything has a purpose and a place. I opened the wrong cupboard looking for glasses and found instead an impressive collection of board games, including one with entirely Danish instructions that we would later attempt to play with the enthusiasm of people who had definitely had enough wine. The glasses, naturally, were in the cupboard directly below. Obviously. Stepping outside for the first time properly, the garden sloped down towards views I had not fully prepared for. The Kattegat stretched out, that particular silvery-grey of northern seas, and I understood immediately why people come to Odsherred for the light. The peninsula has this quality of openness, of sky meeting water with very little fuss in between. I stood there in my inadequate jacket, slightly damp from a failed attempt to help with the fire, and felt that particular shift that happens when a place begins to settle into you. We walked down to the shore as the afternoon faded, the shingle crunching underfoot, passing the occasional painted summerhouse that looked like it had been there since someone first thought "this would be nicer than Copenhagen in July." The water was far too cold for any sensible swimming, which did not stop a determined-looking dog from charging in after a stick while its owner pretended not to know it. That evening, we cooked badly with unfamiliar ingredients from the supermarket in Havnebyen, drank wine that seemed better than its price suggested, and listened to the stove pop and settle. I kept waiting to feel the itch of needing to do something, see something, achieve something. It never quite arrived. The mishaps of the journey, my failed fire, the wrong cupboards, they all seemed to belong to some other version of me who thought holidays needed to be earned rather than simply allowed. I fell asleep to the sound of that woodpecker, still working, and woke to mist over the water and the certain knowledge that I had absolutely no plan for the day. It was perfect. |
