About Odsherred
Our rorvig in Rorvig itself, booked through Novasol, was meant to be straightforward. Coastal Denmark, simple pleasures, that whole hygge-adjacent fantasy I'd been nursing since January. What I hadn't factored in was my own spectacular gift for misreading directions. I'd punched in the postcode with the confidence of a man who'd once successfully navigated IKEA without an argument, only to find myself at the end of a farm track, eyeballing a tractor driver who looked like he'd seen our exact flavour of tourist before. The actual turning, when we finally found it, was so modest I drove straight past it twice. A little gravel path between pine trees, barely suggesting the sea lay just beyond. But then we emerged, and there it was: a proper Danish summer house, all weathered wood and generous windows, with a deck that seemed to sag slightly under the weight of its own contentment. The kids fell silent, which is how I know something has genuinely registered. My first job was the key box, which involved a code I'd written on my phone, my phone which was now at four percent battery, and a level of manual dexterity that abandoned me the moment an audience formed. The children watched with the patient cruelty of a Roman crowd. My wife offered suggestions from a safe distance. After several minutes of what I can only describe as performance art, the box yielded, and I entered our temporary kingdom with the swagger of a man who had definitely not just been outsmarted by a metal container. Inside, the rorvig had that particular Scandinavian trick of being both modest and somehow exactly sufficient. Light everywhere, wooden floors that creaked in friendly greeting, a kitchen that immediately suggested the possibility of proper breakfasts. The children bolted upstairs to claim sleeping territories, and I stood in the living area with my bag still on my shoulder, suddenly aware of how tightly I'd been holding myself. The drive, the mishaps, the sheep - all of it dissolved into something like relief. I stepped onto the deck, and there was the Kattegat, grey-blue and unbothered, maybe a hundred metres down through the dunes. A few other summer houses dotted the view, but nothing that felt crowded. Just that particular Danish coastal quiet, where the wind does most of the talking and you find yourself surprisingly willing to listen. My wife appeared beside me with two cups of tea she'd found in the kitchen, some Danish brand I couldn't pronounce. We stood there like that, watching a small boat make slow progress across the water, neither of us saying much. The kids were already arguing about who got which bunk, a sound that normally grates but here felt like the right kind of noise, the noise of a family settling into a place that would briefly be theirs. Later, I would attempt the barbecue with questionable success. We would walk to the local harbour, buy ice creams, watch Danish families do all this with the effortless competence we seemed to lack. But that first hour, standing on that deck with my tea going cold, remains the thing I keep returning to. The accidental peace of it. The sense that sometimes getting slightly lost is exactly how you need to arrive. |
