I should have known the holiday was going to be eventful when I put the postcode into my sat nav and it directed me to what appeared to be a cabbage field. There I was, sat in a hire car somewhere in Odsherred with a boot full of Danish pastries I'd panic-bought at a petrol station, wondering if I'd accidentally agreed to a spiritual farming retreat rather than a week at a traditional Danish holiday home.

The journey from Copenhagen had started well enough. Smooth roads, pleasant scenery, and I'd even mastered the pronunciation of "Odsherred" to a level where a local hadn't immediately switched to English out of pity. But somewhere between the main road and the winding lanes of Overby Lyng, technology abandoned me. My phone decided this was the perfect moment to download an update, leaving me with nothing but instinct and a crumpled printout of directions I'd optimistically prepared as backup.

I found the property eventually, down a gravel track that crunched satisfyingly under the tyres. The house sat there among the trees, a proper traditional Danish wooden place with that distinctive red-brown colouring that makes you feel like you've stepped into a Scandi crime drama, only without the inevitable murder. I stepped out of the car, stretched my legs, and promptly tripped over a wheelbarrow that had been left by the woodshed. The pastries went everywhere. A custard Danish rolled under the porch like it was making a break for freedom. I lay there for a moment, gravel in my palm, looking up at the Danish sky, thinking about the series of life choices that had led me to this precise moment of humiliation in a country whose primary export appears to be sensible furniture design.

The key was in the lockbox, which I fumbled with for longer than I'd care to admit. There's something uniquely stressful about standing outside a holiday home in a foreign country, convinced you've forgotten the code, while a rogue bee investigates your ear. When it finally clicked open, I practically fell through the door in relief.

And then I stopped. The interior was simple, clean, exactly what you'd hope for in a Danish countryside property. Light wooden floors, functional furniture, that particular Nordic ability to make a room feel spacious without actually being large. The kitchen had that no-nonsense practicality about it, the sort of space that expects you to cook properly rather than just microwave ready meals. I found myself standing in the middle of the living area, pastry still clinging to my sleeve, suddenly aware of how quiet it was. Proper quiet, the kind you forget exists when you live near a main road in Britain.

I made my way to the windows at the back, and there was the garden leading down towards the trees, private and green and entirely unlike my postage-stamp patio at home. A wooden terrace stretched out, clearly designed for that Scandinavian ritual of sitting outside with a drink regardless of temperature. I could see a barbecue tucked to one side, and what looked like garden furniture waiting to be used.

The mishaps of arrival were already softening into something almost fond. There's a particular quality to arriving somewhere slightly dishevelled, to the chaos of travel giving way to the stillness of a new place. I retrieved my surviving pastries from the gravel, made a cup of tea that tasted slightly of Danish water and unfamiliar kettles, and sat on that terrace with my feet up and my dignity slowly recovering. The wheelbarrow had won the first round, but I had an entire week ahead of me, and the whole of Overby Lyng waiting to be properly explored.
