The satnav had been cheerfully insisting we were thirty minutes from our destination for roughly an hour when I finally accepted that "Havnso" was not, in fact, pronounced the way I had been saying it. My wife gave me that look, the one she reserves for my attempts at foreign languages, as I mangled the name at a petrol station somewhere near Kalundborg. The bloke behind the counter smiled politely and pointed toward the coast with what I can only describe as excessive helpfulness, presumably keen to get this linguistically challenged Brit out of his shop.

We rolled into Odsherred proper as the afternoon light was doing that golden Scandinavian thing, all low and flattering, making even my tired Renault look almost presentable. The holiday home sat back from a quiet lane, painted that particular Danish red that manages to look both cheerful and slightly smug about its excellent maintenance. I had insisted on being the one to retrieve the key from the lockbox, a decision that led to five minutes of fumbling in a hedge while my children provided a running commentary on my incompetence from the car window.

The door swung open to that unmistakable smell of a well-kept holiday let: faintly woody, slightly of cleaning products, with an undertone of someone else's nice life. The children bolted past me toward the bedrooms, leaving my wife and me in the hallway with our arms full of bags and the sudden realisation that we had packed approximately fourteen jumpers each despite it being late June. The living room stretched out before us, all light wood and comfortable-looking furniture, with windows framing a view of greenery that made my suburban garden back in Surrey feel like a particularly disappointing allotment.

I had promised everyone I would handle dinner that first evening, a boast founded entirely on having watched a Danish cooking programme once. The kitchen, naturally, was better equipped than my own at home, which only heightened my performance anxiety. I stood before the hob with some local pork and a growing sense of imposter syndrome while my daughter asked why I was whispering encouragement to a frying pan.

What struck me most, once the mild chaos of arrival subsided, was the particular quality of the quiet. Not silence exactly, there were birds and distant sounds of the harbour, but a kind of spacious absence of the constant background hum I had stopped noticing at home. I found myself standing at the kitchen window longer than necessary, watching the light move across the garden, aware of something in me unclenching slightly. The children were squabbling good-naturedly over who had claimed which bunk, my wife was unpacking with the methodical efficiency that makes her indispensable to any operation, and I was holding a wooden spoon like a talisman, feeling briefly and unexpectedly at peace.

The mishaps continued, of course. I misread the hot water instructions and subjected myself to a shower of distinctly Baltic temperatures. The youngest managed to get her foot stuck in a deck chair in a manner that defied basic physics. But sitting on that slightly wonky wooden terrace as evening crept in, nursing a cup of tea and watching the sky do its slow fade toward that pale northern night, I felt the particular satisfaction of having arrived somewhere that asked very little of you except to be present for it.

The pork, incidentally, was edible. My wife said so, and she is not a woman given to culinary charity.
