About North Zealand
We finally crunched onto the gravel drive in a state of mild marital fraying, and I will confess that my first thought was ungenerous: surely this could not be the place. The photographs had shown something charmingly rustic, but what stood before us looked almost aggressively unassuming, a modest wooden cottage hunkered among birch trees with a garden that seemed to have given up on formal gardening sometime in the late 1980s. The key was in the lockbox, which took me eleven minutes and some creative swearing to open, by which point a small cloud of midges had taken a proprietorial interest in my left ear. Then we stepped inside, and something peculiar happened. The world slowed down. Not in that forced mindfulness way that people post about on social media, but genuinely, physically slowed, as though the cottage itself ran on a different temporal frequency to the rest of Denmark. The living room was all honey-coloured wood and slightly sagging sofas that somehow managed to be more comfortable than our ostensibly superior furniture at home. There was a wood-burning stove that looked as though it had witnessed several decades of hygge, and shelves of paperbacks left by previous occupants, their spines cracked and softened by salt air and indifferent reading habits. I had brought three novels with me, ambitiously, plus a tablet loaded with articles I had been meaning to read since approximately 2019. I opened none of them on that first afternoon. Instead, I found myself on the weathered wooden bench in the garden, a cup of tea going cold beside me, watching nothing in particular. The garden was not landscaped so much as loosely encouraged, a tangle of wild roses and unmown grass that merged without ceremony into the heathland beyond. A single determined bumblebee investigated my shoe for several minutes. I did not shoo it away. This was, I realised with some surprise, the most interesting thing that had happened to me in months. My partner emerged with biscuits and no particular agenda. We sat there until the light changed, until the shadows of the birch trees stretched across the unmown lawn like fingers, until someone remembered that humans require dinner and we wandered inside to make something simple from the supplies we had brought. There was no urgency to any of it. The satnav mishap already felt like it had happened to someone else, someone who still believed that arriving efficiently mattered. That first evening, I understood something I had been trying to learn for years without success. The cottage asked nothing of us. There were no recommended experiences to tick off, no curated local highlights demanding our attention within a five-mile radius. There was simply the garden, the books, the slow accumulation of hours spent doing very little with complete intention. I fell asleep that night on the slightly sagging sofa, a paperback open on my chest, to the sound of wind moving through heathland I had not yet explored and felt no particular need to explore tomorrow. The bumblebee, I suspect, had long since moved on to more purposeful engagements. |
