About North Zealand
The walk from Gilleleje station to the cottage took about fifteen minutes, though I managed to stretch it to twenty-five by stopping to photograph a particularly handsome cat sitting outside a yellow house. I was already in that holiday headspace where everything feels worth noticing. The air smelled of salt and pine, and the town itself felt pleasingly unhurried, all low buildings and quiet streets leading down towards the harbour. Finding the cottage was straightforward enough, though I did walk past the gate once because I was too busy admiring a garden full of red poppies. The key was exactly where promised, and I fumbled it into the lock with that particular excitement that comes from knowing you have absolutely nothing pressing to do for days. The first thing that struck me was the light. The living area opened out towards a small garden, and the afternoon sun was pouring in through glass doors, making everything feel immediately peaceful. I stood there for a moment with my ridiculous oversized rucksack still on, just breathing it in. The furniture was simple and comfortable, nothing trying too hard, and there was a small terrace outside that already had my name on it. I dumped my bag with theatrical exhaustion and made the essential first inspection. Kettle: present. Decent mugs: several. A small collection of books left by previous guests: jackpot. I made tea with the kind of precision I reserve for important rituals, then took it outside to the garden. That first afternoon set the pattern for everything that followed. I did not explore Gilleleje harbour, charming as I knew it would be. I did not walk the coastal path, though I could see where it began from my garden chair. I read three chapters of a mediocre thriller, watched a blackbird argue with a wood pigeon in the hedge, and felt genuinely tired in that satisfying way that only happens when you have finally stopped moving. The garden was not large or particularly designed, which was precisely its charm. There was a patch of longer grass where butterflies seemed to hold important meetings, a weathered wooden table that wobbled slightly, and a clothes line that creaked in the breeze. I found myself noticing things with embarrassing intensity. The particular shade of green on the new birch leaves. The way the light shifted across the terrace at six o'clock. How my tea went cold because I had forgotten to drink it while watching a bee navigate a patch of clover. By evening I had moved approximately four metres from my original position, and this felt like genuine progress. I cooked a simple dinner in the small kitchen, ate it outside with a glass of wine that tasted better than it probably was, and watched the sky do that slow Scandinavian fade into grey-blue that seems to last for hours. I thought about my usual life, the constant low-level hum of things I ought to be doing, and felt something in my shoulders actually release. Not dramatically, not all at once, but gradually, like a tide going out. I was not achieving anything. I was not even particularly relaxed in that performative way people sometimes are on holiday, doing yoga at sunrise or whatever. I was simply still, in a small Danish garden, with a mediocre thriller and cold tea, and it was absolutely enough. The blackbird returned for a final territorial dispute as the light finally disappeared. I watched it without any particular thoughts, then went inside to sleep more deeply than I had in months. |
