About North Jutland
The cottage sat there like something from a very restrained fairy tale. Not the flashy kind with glass slippers and talking furniture, but the sensible Nordic sort where everyone probably owns proper waterproofs and understands hygge without needing a book to explain it. I stepped out of the car and immediately forgot about the coffee situation. The garden had that slightly overgrown, deliberately unbothered look that suggested someone once cared deeply, then wisely decided to let nature get on with it. A wooden table sat beneath a tree that I would later learn drops small, inoffensive berries onto whatever you are reading at precisely timed intervals. The key was exactly where promised, which felt almost suspicious after my journey. I fumbled with the lock, still wearing one shoe because the other had somehow filled with gravel on the farm track, and stumbled inside. The smell hit first. That particular combination of old wood, something faintly coastal, and the ghost of a thousand previous holidays where people cooked simple things slowly. I stood in the doorway with my single shoe and my pastry lump and felt something in my shoulders drop that I had not realised I was holding. The living room wrapped around me like a well-worn jumper. Not fancy, not trying to be anything other than comfortable. A sofa that had clearly been chosen for napping potential. Windows that framed the garden rather than dominating it. I found myself doing that thing where you walk around touching surfaces for no reason, running my hand along a windowsill, pressing a cushion experimentally, confirming that yes, this was real, and yes, I was allowed to simply stop. I had brought three books with the ambitious intention of finally finishing something literary and impressive. By the second afternoon, I was deep into a paperback thriller with a cover featuring an unnecessarily stern man in a trench coat, and I could not have been happier about it. The garden became my headquarters. Morning coffee at the wooden table, watching whatever birds could be bothered to visit. Afternoon reading in a deckchair that creaked reassuringly with every small adjustment. Evening staring at nothing in particular while the light did that slow, golden fade that North Jutland seems to specialise in. There was a moment, perhaps day three, when I noticed I had not checked my phone in hours. Not as some digital detox achievement, but simply because I had not thought to. The berries kept falling. The horse, visible in a distant field, remained judgmental. I made terrible coffee and did not care. I walked to the water's edge one morning, watched the Limfjord doing its calm, grey thing, and walked back. That was the entire activity. Walk, look, return. The pastry lump lasted three days, gradually diminishing as I picked at it during reading sessions. The coffee stain never fully came out of my passenger seat. These became, somehow, part of the holiday rather than mishaps to overcome. Evidence that I had arrived slightly chaotic and been slowly, gently, unhurriedly sorted out by doing very little in a garden that asked nothing of me. On my final morning, I sat with my stern-man thriller and my terrible coffee and watched a berry fall precisely onto page forty-seven. I did not move it. Some things, I had learned, were better left exactly where they landed. |
