About North Jutland
We eventually found our way to the little cluster of holiday homes, and I immediately forgave myself the detour. The Skiveren property sat there looking terribly Scandinavian and sensible, all clean lines and weathered wood, while I pulled up looking considerably less composed. The key was in the lockbox, which of course I couldn't open, because holiday lockboxes exist specifically to humble otherwise capable adults. A passing neighbour watched me struggle for a dignified period before wandering over to demonstrate the simple upward flick required. I laughed heartily. He did not. But here's where it gets interesting. That wrong turn had made us late, and in my flustered state I managed to leave the proper directions to the local shop on the kitchen table. We set off for supplies on foot, took what I insisted was a shortcut, and promptly found ourselves wandering through the Skiveren Klitplantage. This pine plantation stretches out in all directions like some deliberate conspiracy to confuse southerners. The paths aren't so much marked as suggested. We walked for perhaps half an hour, the sound of the sea somewhere to our left, the smell of resin thick in the air, and realised with the slow dawning horror of the truly lost that we had no idea which direction we'd come from. My other half, who possesses the navigational instincts of a homing pigeon, seemed almost pleased. We stumbled upon a small clearing where someone had left a weathered bench facing absolutely nothing in particular. Just pines and sand and silence. We sat there, supposedly stranded, and I found myself laughing properly for the first time that day. No itinerary, no checklist, just the accidental discovery of somewhere nobody had told us to find. We wandered on, increasingly unconcerned, and emerged somehow at a tiny beach I'd never seen on any map. The sand was almost white, the water that particular steely grey of the Kattegat, and there wasn't another soul in sight. A few weathered posts marked where boats had once been pulled up, perhaps decades ago. We sat on a driftwood log and watched oystercatchers working the shoreline, feeling rather pleased with our incompetence. The shop was eventually found by walking toward what we guessed was west, based on the position of a water tower we'd spotted earlier. We bought our bread and milk from a woman who seemed entirely unsurprised by our dusty, dishevelled appearance. "First time in the plantation?" she asked, in excellent English. We admitted it was. She smiled in that particularly Danish way that suggests both sympathy and mild amusement at foreign antics. That evening, back at the house, I cooked a simple meal and we ate with the windows open to the pine-scented air. I kept thinking about that bench in the clearing, the unmarked beach, the water tower that had become our unlikely saviour. The whole day had been a catalogue of small failures that had somehow delivered something better than efficiency ever could. The next morning I woke early and walked out deliberately without a map, turning down paths that looked unpromising, finding another hidden cove where someone had stacked stones into a small cairn. I added my own pebble and walked back by a different route, still not entirely sure where I was, not particularly caring. Some holidays, I've realised, only begin properly when you stop trying to get them right. |
