About North Jutland
I should have known the sat nav was up to no good the moment it tried to send me through what looked suspiciously like someone's beet field. There I was, bouncing along a gravel track in my hired Volvo, convinced I was pioneering a new route to North Jutland that would revolutionise Danish tourism. Spoiler: I was not. Twenty minutes of increasingly nervous driving later, I spotted an actual human being walking a dog and performed what can only be described as an apologetic U-turn of shame.

The proper road, naturally, was tarmacked, well-signposted, and running parallel to my little agricultural adventure the entire time.

By the time I reached the Osterby, my holiday cottage near the village of the same name, I had worked myself into that peculiar state of frazzled determination that follows a long drive, a ferry crossing, and one entirely unnecessary detour through root vegetables. I pulled up, grabbed my bags with theatrical exhaustion, and promptly walked straight into the wooden porch post. Not hard enough to cause injury, mind you. Just hard enough to make a dull thunk and remind me that first impressions are apparently not my forte.

The cottage itself, though, had the good grace to ignore my clumsiness. It sat there in that understated Scandinavian way, all pale wood and sensible angles, looking like it had been patiently waiting for someone exactly like me to stop assaulting its architecture and come inside. The key was where promised, in a little lockbox that I fumbled with for an embarrassingly long time, my cold fingers making a mockery of the four-digit code I had memorised hours ago.

Stepping through the door, I was met with that particular smell of holiday rental in the best possible sense: faintly of pine, faintly of someone else's cleaning products, and entirely of possibility. The open-plan living space stretched before me, all light wood floors and windows that seemed determined to pull the North Jutland sky indoors. I dumped my bags with the grace of a sack of potatoes and stood there, rotating slowly like a malfunctioning display unit, taking it all in.

The kitchen immediately declared itself the sort of kitchen that expects you to actually cook rather than merely reheat. Proper knives, enough pots to suggest ambition, and a view across fields that made even the prospect of washing up seem almost romantic. I opened the fridge, found it empty and humming efficiently, and felt an odd satisfaction. This was mine to fill, mine to get wrong, mine to gradually make feel like somewhere I belonged.

The mishaps continued, of course. I misjudged the shower temperature and performed an involuntary yelp that I am certain carried to neighbouring properties. I discovered the television remote's batteries were precisely at that level of dying where you must press with increasing violence to change channel. I made coffee with the provided machine and immediately forgot which button I had pressed, spending several anxious minutes wondering if I had accidentally summoned some Danish function I was not qualified to operate.

Yet standing at the window later, cup finally in hand, watching the light do that particular late-afternoon thing it does over North Jutland farmland, something settled. The sat nav nonsense, the porch post, the shower shock, the remote rage, all of it felt already like the necessary chaos before the calm. The cottage asked nothing of me except presence. The fields outside did not care about my clumsy arrival. Somewhere nearby, I knew, was the Limfjord with its shifting light, and beyond that the proper North Sea coast with beaches I had promised myself I would walk.

But for now, this was enough. This quiet, this particular quality of northern Danish afternoon, this sense of having arrived somewhere that would slowly teach me its rhythms. I had come in chaos. I would stay, I suspected, in something approaching peace.
