About North Jutland
I'd driven up from Aalborg with the sort of confidence that only comes from having glanced at Google Maps precisely once, three days prior. The hire car was a boxy little thing that smelled faintly of dog biscuits, and I'd convinced myself I could navigate North Jutland purely by following the smell of the sea. This theory collapsed spectacularly somewhere outside Hjorring when I took what I believed to be a "scenic shortcut" and found myself staring at a field of particularly judgmental-looking llamas. No sea. No village. Just llamas and the growing suspicion that I had become the sort of person who gets lost within sight of a main road.

Forty minutes of increasingly creative U-turns later, I finally spotted the distinctive yellow timber framing of the holiday home. Lokken itself, when I eventually reached it, had that wonderful quality of being almost aggressively Danish: neat, colourful, quietly self-assured. The house sat on a quiet residential lane, a proper traditional summer place with white-painted windows and a garden that looked like someone had actually enjoyed tending it rather than simply endured it.

My first attempt at entry was, predictably, a small disaster. The key box code worked fine; my ability to coordinate two hands simultaneously did not. The key clattered onto the doorstep, I bobbled the door handle, and somehow managed to step on my own sunglasses, which I'd apparently placed in my pocket without folding. The snap was audible. I stood there in the afternoon light, holding broken plastic, and had one of those moments of perfect clarity about my own competence. Still, the door swung open to reveal a living room that smelled of pine and clean linen, and suddenly the sunglasses mattered rather less.

I dumped my bag with the enthusiasm of someone who has been driving in circles for the better part of an afternoon and immediately opened every door in a frantic inventory. The place was bigger than it looked from outside, all slanted ceilings and unexpected nooks. The kitchen had that particular Scandinavian brightness that makes you feel slightly inadequate about your own domestic habits. I found myself wiping the already-clean counter just to feel involved.

The real discovery came when, still unsettled by my own uselessness, I decided to "just have a quick wander" before properly unpacking. I turned left instead of right at the lane's end, purely because a ginger cat looked like it knew something. This is how I found the path to the dunes, completely unmarked, winding between two houses with gardens full of wind-sculpted roses. Ten minutes of sandy track and I emerged onto a stretch of beach that I initially assumed must be the main Lokken strand, then realised was something else entirely when I walked for twenty minutes and encountered precisely one other person, a windswept woman walking a Labrador with the resigned air of someone who understood weather.

The light was doing that extraordinary North Jutland thing, low and golden and somehow making the sand appear almost silver. I kept walking, past a small stream cutting through the dunes, past a collapsed wooden structure that might once have been a bathing hut, past a cluster of beach houses painted in colours that seemed deliberately chosen to argue with the landscape. Each time I thought I should turn back, some small curiosity pulled me further: a particular rock formation, the sound of oystercatchers, the glimpse of what turned out to be a tiny freshwater pool hidden in the hollow between dunes.

I was, by this point, thoroughly lost in the most wonderful way. The sun had begun its leisurely descent and I had no real notion of which direction the house lay. My phone had achieved that special roaming uselessness where it claims to have signal but refuses to confirm anything useful about geography. I found myself laughing, actually laughing out loud, at the absurdity of it. Here I was, a grown man who couldn't find a beach he'd arrived at twenty minutes ago, wandering through one of the most peaceful landscapes I'd ever encountered.

The return happened almost by accident. I followed what I believed to be a different stream back toward the houses, and emerged two streets from where I'd started, recognising the ginger cat immediately. It was washing itself on the same garden wall, utterly unsurprised.

That evening, I sat in the house's small conservatory with a cup of tea that tasted of triumph, watching the last light fade over the garden. The broken sunglasses sat on the windowsill like a small memorial to my own ridiculousness. Somewhere in the distance, I could still hear the sea. I'd found something I hadn't known I was looking for, simply by being too incompetent to follow a straightforward path. There's probably a lesson in that, though I'm not entirely sure I want to examine it too closely. Some things are better left as happy accidents.
