I managed to leave my passport on the kitchen table in Aalborg, which is quite the achievement considering I'd checked for it three times before leaving. Discovered this forty minutes into the drive north, just as the flat Danish landscape started getting properly coastal and interesting. My partner gave me that look - you know the one, fond exasperation mixed with mild despair - and we turned round. Two hours added to the journey, and I'd already done the classic British thing of apologising to the car.

By the time we actually reached Hou, the light was doing that soft golden thing it does in late afternoon, and I was in that peculiar state of hungry-tired where everything seems either hilarious or deeply profound. The village sits on the eastern coast of North Jutland, proper fishing harbour territory, all weathered wooden buildings and boats that look like they've seen things. Our holiday home was one of those traditional Danish summer places, red wooden cladding, white trim, the whole hygge-adjacent aesthetic that makes you feel instantly inadequate about your own decorating choices.

The key was in a lockbox, which of course I fumbled with for an embarrassing length of time while a man across the lane watched from his garden. Eventually he wandered over, not hurried, the way people do when they know there's no actual rush. "First time with the box?" he asked, in English that was somehow both heavily accented and flawless. Jens, retired fisherman, lived in the blue house with the excellent hydrangeas. He'd been born in Hou, would die in Hou, and found tourists endlessly amusing. Within five minutes he'd told me about the time a German family tried to barbecue in a storm, the council's doomed attempt to introduce parking meters in 1987, and his theory that the best herring was always caught on Tuesdays. "Don't ask why," he said, tapping his nose. "Just is."

The house itself was simple, clean, that particular Scandinavian practicality where everything works and nothing shouts. But it was the neighbours who made the first evening memorable. We'd brought provisions - sensible British planning - and were attempting to decipher the outdoor grill when a woman appeared at the fence. Lene, Jens's wife, bearing a plate of freshly smoked fish and the kind of directness that comes from decades of harbour life. "You will ruin good meat with that fire," she announced, not unkindly. "Eat this instead. Tomorrow, I show you the proper way."

We ate on the small terrace as the light faded, fish that tasted of actual smoke and the sea, not supermarket approximation. Another neighbour passed, walking a dog of indeterminate breed that looked like it had been assembled from spare parts. He nodded, didn't stop, but raised a hand in that universal gesture of acknowledged existence.

I found myself thinking about how we holiday, us British lot. Rushing to see everything, tick boxes, accumulate experiences like stamps. Here was something slower, built on accidental encounters and unsolicited fish. The passport debacle had cost us time, but perhaps gained us something too - arriving frazzled enough to be receptive, to need help, to accept smoked herring from strangers.

Jens reappeared as we were washing up, apparently having radar for when newcomers might still be doing things wrong. "You are staying how long?" he asked. When I told him a week, he nodded slowly, as if this required serious consideration. "Good. By Wednesday, you will understand about the herring. By Friday, you will be boring other people with this knowledge." He grinned, showing the gap where a front tooth once lived. "This is how it works. Welcome to Hou."
