About North Jutland
The drive up from Aalborg Airport had lulled me into a false sense of competence. North Jutland does that to you. The roads are so smooth, the landscape so gently rolling with fields of yellow rapeseed and those typical Danish farmhouses with their immaculate thatched roofs, that you start thinking you have everything under control. I even managed the supermarket stop in Hjorring without disaster, filling the boot with bacon, eggs, and what I thought was butter but turned out to be some kind of advanced Danish cheese spread. That would become relevant later. Hostrup Strand itself appeared through the pine trees like a postcard that had come to life. The little cluster of holiday homes sits tucked between the forest and the Limfjord, and my actual place - once I found it, once I swallowed my pride and rang the letting office - turned out to be a charming wooden bungalow with a deck that practically begged for a cup of tea and some serious doing-nothing. The pine scent hit me immediately, that proper coastal forest smell mixed with something faintly salty from the water nearby. Getting inside was where my dignity took its second hit of the afternoon. The key box cooperated, but the door seemed to have been fitted by someone who enjoyed a challenge. I shoved, I pulled, I muttered things that would have made my grandmother disappointed in me. Eventually I realised you lifted slightly while turning. Of course you did. Danish design is beautiful and clever and occasionally assumes you are too. The interior saved my mood entirely. Light wood everywhere, those big windows that Scandinavians somehow make standard, and a kitchen that looked actually usable rather than the usual holiday rental afterthought. I put the kettle on, because some rituals transcend borders, and stood on the deck watching a pair of geese argue with each other on the little path down toward the shore. The fjord water was that particular grey-blue it gets when the sky is doing its typical North Jutland thing, neither fully sunny nor properly overcast, just existing in that comfortable Danish middle ground. Then came the butter incident. I had promised myself a proper fry-up to celebrate arrival, a little taste of home to ground me. Bacon sizzling nicely, eggs cracked, toast on. Reached for my "butter" and discovered my error. The advanced Danish cheese spread went into the pan instead. I stood there watching it behave in ways no dairy product should, and something about the absurdity of it all - the wrong house, the door battle, now this - made me laugh properly for the first time that day. I scraped the pan, started again with actual oil like a sensible person, and ate my slightly odd breakfast on that deck as the light began to soften toward evening. A woman walked past with a dog that looked like it had never had a bad day in its life. Somewhere in the trees, a woodpecker was doing its thing. The cheese spread went into the fridge for braver moments. That first evening, I did not explore. I did not check guidebooks or plan adventures to nearby attractions. I sat with my tea and watched the fjord change colour, feeling the particular peace that comes from being slightly humbled by a place. North Jutland does not shout for your attention. It waits, patient and amused, for you to slow down enough to meet it properly. I went to bed early, slightly sunburned from the drive, full of bacon and good intentions about tomorrow's walking. The quiet was absolute, broken only by wind in the pines and the occasional distant sound of water. Somewhere out there was a beach, proper dunes, maybe that famous shifting sand I'd read about. All of that could wait. For now, I was here, in the right house finally, and that felt like enough of an achievement for one day. |
