I should have known the holiday was going to be interesting when I put the postcode into my sat nav and it confidently directed me to a field full of very unimpressed cows. Three hours of driving from Esbjerg, two ferry crossings worth of patience already worn thin, and there I was, apologising to livestock through my windscreen while frantically jabbing at my phone.

Turns out Hostrup Strand does not, in fact, share a postcode with a dairy farm. Who knew?

The actual property, when I finally found it, sat tucked behind a modest dune about a mile south of Lokken proper. A classic North Jutland summerhouse, all weathered wood and sensible Danish windows, looking like it had been politely waiting for me to stop bothering cattle. I grabbed my bags with the triumphant energy of someone who had definitely not just wasted forty minutes of their life.

The key box, naturally, refused to open. I stood there in the gravel driveway, wind coming in fresh off the Skagerrak, performing what I can only describe as an interpretive dance of frustration. Wrong code. Right code, wrong angle. Right angle, box stuck. A man walking his dog passed by, gave me the small nod of someone who has seen this exact scene play out a hundred times before with other hapless holidaymakers.

When the box finally yielded, I practically fell through the front door in my eagerness to assert dominance over the situation.

And then I stopped.

The place smelled of pine and salt and that particular clean stillness that only proper seaside houses seem to manage. Floor-to-ceiling windows in the living area framed the North Sea like a painting I had not earned. I had arrived flustered and ridiculous, and Hostrup Strand simply existed around me, indifferent to my chaos, quietly spectacular.

I dumped my bags in the wrong room first, obviously. Wandered back out. Found the actual bedroom with its crisp white linens and that minimalist Scandinavian practicality that makes you feel simultaneously judged and cared for. The kitchen wanted for nothing. The terrace begged for a cup of tea and some serious sitting.

I made the tea. I sat. The wind did its thing, rhythmic and relentless, and somewhere out there were those cows, probably still wondering what my problem was.

I thought about how I had rushed and cursed and made everything harder than it needed to be. How I had treated a gentle journey like an obstacle course to be conquered. The Danes have this word, hygge, which gets thrown around too much by people buying scented candles, but sitting there with my hands wrapped around a mug, watching the light shift across the water, I understood something quieter underneath it. Not cosiness exactly. Permission to stop performing.

The dog walker passed again. I waved with what I hoped looked like the relaxed confidence of someone who absolutely knew what they were doing. He probably saw right through me.

That evening I walked the beach at low tide, the sand stretching wide and firm, distant figures bending for amber in the dying light. Lokken's painted bathing huts stood in their cheerful rows, defying the grey. I had done nothing yet, really. No proper exploring, no planned activities, no justification for the journey beyond simply being there.

My first impressions of Hostrup Strand were, honestly, mostly of myself. Flustered, stubborn, gradually unwinding. The house watched without comment. The sea did not care about my sat nav skills. I went to bed early, slightly sunburned from my stubborn refusal to admit the wind could burn, and slept deeper than I had in months.
