About North Jutland
I'd never driven a right-hand-drive car onto a left-hand-drive ferry before, and it showed. There I was, proudly reversing our Volvo onto the Color Line sailing from Oslo to Hirtshals, absolutely convinced I was nailing it. The deckhand's increasingly frantic hand signals suggested otherwise. Turns out I'd parked us diagonally across two lanes, blocking a German caravan and a very patient Danish lorry driver who looked like he'd seen this exact incompetence roughly four thousand times. My wife sat rigid in the passenger seat, making that particular face she reserves for my "adventures." The children found it hilarious, naturally.

Three hours of North Jutland countryside later, and we were properly lost. Not charmingly lost, not "oh look, a picturesque village" lost. Genuinely, phone-dead, arguing-about-whether-that-was-the-same-hay-bale lost. The sat-nav had given up around Lokken, and my Danish pronunciation of "Helligso Strand" apparently sounds like I'm sneezing while chewing toffee. We stopped at a petrol station where a lovely woman explained, very slowly and with helpful pointing, that we'd driven past our turning roughly twenty minutes ago. Twice, apparently.

But then we found it. And I understood immediately why people bother with the ferry nonsense.

The cottage at Helligso Strand sits in that particular Danish way where everything looks modest and unassuming until you actually arrive. The red wooden exterior, the little terrace, the way the light hits the Limfjord in late afternoon. We stood there with our bags, the children suddenly quiet for once, and I felt that particular holiday feeling. You know the one. Where your shoulders drop about three inches without you asking them to.

The inside was exactly what you want from a Danish summer house. Not fancy, not trying to impress anyone. Just comfortable in that deliberate Scandinavian way. The kitchen had everything slightly worn in the right places. The living room had those big windows that make you feel like you're outside even when you're not. My son immediately claimed the loft bedroom, which involved a ladder he was technically too young for, but we decided to pretend we hadn't noticed.

Within an hour, we'd established our particular brand of family chaos. My daughter had somehow got sand in her hair despite not having been to the beach yet. The kitchen smelled of the coffee I'd spilled trying to work the unfamiliar hob. Someone had left the bathroom light on and we couldn't find the switch. It was perfect, honestly.

The beach itself is proper North Jutland. Not Mediterranean postcard stuff. Windy, bracing, the kind of beach where you genuinely need the jumper you brought. We walked down that first evening, the children running ahead to examine rock pools, my wife and I trailing behind with that slightly stunned expression parents get when they've finally stopped moving for five seconds. The water was that particular grey-green, the sky enormous in the way it only seems to be up here.

I kept thinking about the ferry, about my ridiculous parking, about getting lost twice. Normally I'd have been quietly fuming, turning it over, making it into something it didn't need to be. But there's something about this place, about the particular rhythm of cottage life, that makes that stuff feel like what it actually was. Just a slightly rubbish start to a genuinely lovely thing.

We cooked a terrible first dinner using ingredients we'd bought in a panic at a supermarket whose layout made absolutely no sense to us. The children complained, then ate everything anyway. We sat on that terrace as the light went, wrapped in blankets, watching the fjord go still. No one mentioned screens. No one mentioned them once.

That first night, I slept better than I had in months. Woke to my son already awake, staring out the window at the water, completely still, completely content. The particular quiet of a place that's doing exactly what it promises to do.

We're here for a week. I suspect I'll still be terrible at reversing. I suspect we'll get lost again. I suspect it won't matter even slightly.
