About North Jutland
I'd never heard of a "Gatten" before this trip, and honestly I assumed it was some sort of Danish pastry. Turns out it's a traditional holiday cottage, and I was about to spend a week in one with my lot, smack in the middle of North Jutland. The journey up from Aalborg Airport had been surprisingly painless, the kids were behaving, the sat nav was cooperating, and I was starting to feel dangerously smug about the whole thing. That's always when disaster strikes, isn't it?

We'd stopped at a supermarket in Farso for supplies, because nothing says "relaxed family break" like panic-buying enough bacon to feed a small village. I was so busy congratulating myself on remembering to bring reusable bags that I completely missed the turning for Gatten. The sat nav, offended by my incompetence, fell silent in protest. We ended up on a narrow farm track surrounded by nothing but beet fields and the judgmental gaze of some very Danish-looking cows. My wife gave me that look, the one that says "I married you for better or worse, and this is definitely the worse." Twenty minutes of three-point turns and creative language later, we found the proper lane.

The cottage revealed itself gradually, tucked among birch trees with that distinctive black timber frame and whitewashed panels that makes you feel like you've wandered into a Hans Christian Andersen illustration. Except Andersen never had to wrestle a wheeled suitcase through gravel while a seven-year-old complains about needing a wee. The key was in the lockbox as promised, and I fumbled with the code like a burglar having a stroke, but eventually the door swung open and that wonderful, particular smell hit us: wood polish, slightly damp wool, and the ghost of a thousand previous holidays.

The living room was all low ceilings and comfortable chaos, mismatched furniture that had clearly absorbed decades of happy lounging. My daughter immediately claimed the window seat, my son discovered the television had Danish children's channels he'd never understand, and I stood there with an armful of shopping bags realising we'd bought approximately seventeen things we didn't need and forgotten toilet paper. Classic.

The kitchen was compact but properly equipped, the sort of space that forces family togetherness whether you like it or not. I could already picture the morning routine: someone burning toast, someone else arguing about who used the last of the milk, me pretending I knew how to operate the coffee maker. The bedrooms upstairs were simple, clean, with that slight slope to the floors that makes you feel pleasantly drunk even when you're not. I banged my head on a beam within approximately forty seconds, because apparently I learn nothing from experience.

By evening, we'd established our pattern. The kids were in the garden, which rolled down to a proper grassy area with space to run off the energy they'd stored up like batteries. My wife had opened wine. I was attempting to operate a barbecue that seemed to have been designed as a practical joke, the flames behaving like a living thing with a personal vendetta against me. The smoke blew directly into my face no matter where I stood, which the children found hilarious.

As I stood there, eyes streaming, flipping sausages with the confidence of a man who absolutely did not know what he was doing, I had one of those moments. You know the ones. Where you realise that this is it, really, the whole point. Not the polished Instagram version of family holidays, but this slightly chaotic, imperfect, smoke-in-your-eyes reality. The kids were filthy already, we'd forgotten half our shopping, and I'd probably undercooked the chicken. But we were here, together, in this funny little Danish cottage with its creaky floors and its view of proper countryside, and it felt exactly right.

The sun took forever to set, that long northern evening light that makes you lose track of time completely. We ate outside despite my barbecue crimes, wrapped in blankets because Danish summer evenings have opinions about temperature. The kids fell asleep in their clothes, my wife and I sat up too late talking nonsense, and somewhere in the distance I could hear what I chose to believe was a nightingale rather than a particularly ambitious pigeon.

That first day set the tone for everything that followed, really. Not perfect, not polished, but completely, utterly ours.
