I should have known the holiday had truly begun when I spent twenty minutes trying to unlock the wrong door at Bratten Strand. We'd driven up from Aalborg through flat Danish farmland, the kind of landscape that makes you feel like you're motoring through a giant green tablecloth, and arrived at the little cluster of holiday cottages with that particular brand of British optimism that assumes everything will simply work out. The key box code was correct. The door was not. I jiggled, I swore gently, I tried the handle seventeen times. Then a friendly neighbour emerged from three doors down and pointed out, with admirable restraint, that I was in fact trying to break into her summer house. Our actual cottage was identical in every way except, crucially, for the number on the wall. I laughed, she laughed, my wife did not laugh.

But stepping through the correct doorway made up for it immediately. The place had that particular Scandinavian knack of being both simple and somehow exactly right. Light wooden floors, a kitchen that actually had sharp knives for once, and windows that framed the garden like a painting someone else had thoughtfully hung for us. I dumped the bags with the theatrical exhaustion of a man who had done almost nothing for several hours, and wandered outside with a cup of tea that I would forget on the windowsill and discover cold three hours later.

The garden became our world for the week. Not a manicured showpiece, but the sort of practical Danish outdoor space that knows its purpose: a patch of grass for lying on, some hardy shrubs that have clearly seen worse winters than I have, and a wooden table where we ate every meal that didn't require cooking indoors. I spent an embarrassing amount of time simply watching a single bumblebee work its way through what I eventually learned to call "the flowers by the shed" because I never did find out their actual name. This became a point of pride. I was not there to identify things. I was there to not identify things.

I had brought three books and finished none of them, which I consider the true mark of a successful holiday. Each would sit on my lap for an hour while I looked at clouds instead, or listened to the particular silence of a Danish afternoon that is not quite silence at all but rather the absence of the wrong kind of noise. No traffic to speak of. No urgent anything. Just wind in the pines that line the area, and occasionally the distant sound of someone else's child being told to put on sunscreen.

We walked to the strand itself, of course. Bratten Strand delivers exactly what the name promises: proper North Jutland beach, wide and windy, the Skagerrak stretching out with that slightly forbidding beauty that makes you understand why Danes are so sensible about woollens. We paddled, we retreated, we congratulated ourselves on our bravery. Then we walked back and did nothing again, which was the whole point.

By day four I had stopped checking my watch entirely. This felt less like a decision and more like a gentle forgetting, the way you might misplace a habit. I cooked simple things badly and enjoyed them enormously. I sat in the garden until the light went, which at that latitude takes its sweet time about happening. I thought about how I always promise myself I'll slow down properly back home, and how I never do, and how perhaps that is simply the nature of the thing: that holidays earn their value precisely because they end.

On our final morning I packed with the lazy efficiency of someone who has genuinely rested. The wrong-door incident came up again, as it was bound to, and I took my ribbing with good grace. We drove away through the same flat green landscape, and I found myself already planning a return without quite admitting it to myself. Some places earn that without trying particularly hard. Bratten Strand did it simply by letting me do the same.
