About North Jutland
I have never been so grateful for a thermos of tea in my entire life. We had been driving up through Jutland for the better part of five hours, chasing the last of the October light, when my partner announced with the confidence of a man who had not looked at a map since Aalborg that he knew a shortcut through the dunes. Reader, there is no shortcut through the dunes in autumn. There is only sand, regret, and the slow realisation that your wheeled suitcase was perhaps not the wisest choice for a holiday home nestled among coastal pine.

We arrived at the blokhus as the sun was performing that particular North Jutland trick of seeming to set in three directions at once, painting the Kattegat in bands of copper and bruised purple. The house sat among its neighbours in a tidy row, all timber and angular Danish practicality, looking thoroughly sealed against whatever the Skagerrak might throw at it in the coming days. I loved it instantly. My suitcase, now full of sand and wounded pride, did not share my enthusiasm.

The key was in the lockbox, which my partner fumbled with until his fingers went numb. October in these parts does not announce itself politely. It arrives with a wind that finds every gap in your coat, every optimistic gap in your planning. We had packed for crisp autumn walks and candlelit evenings. We had not packed for the particular damp cold that seeps through timber walls and reminds you that you are, in fact, at the mercy of the North Sea's moods.

Stepping inside, the blokhus smelled of pine resin and the ghost of summer holidays recently departed. The owners had left the heating on low, bless them, and the radiators ticked their welcome as we stood in the hallway dripping sand and self-consciousness. Through the windows, the garden furniture sat in its winter huddle, cushions stored away, the barbecue looking frankly relieved at its seasonal retirement. The terrace, which I knew from the photographs would be glorious in July, now faced the gathering dark with the stoicism of something that understood its purpose was months away.

I made the tea while my partner performed what he called a reconnaissance and what I called walking into furniture in an unfamiliar room. The kitchen was compact, efficiently Danish, with a view across to neighbouring blokhuse whose windows glowed with similar arrivals, similar attempts at making autumn feel like a choice rather than a season happening to you. Somewhere out there, I imagined, another couple was discovering they had forgotten the cooking oil or were arguing about which switch controlled the underfloor heating.

The thing about October in Blokhus is that the town knows exactly what it is. The summer crowds have gone, taking their ice creams and their beach towels with them. What remains is the permanent population, the year-round houses, the sense that you have arrived at a party just as the hosts are putting their feet up and not entirely disguising their surprise at seeing you. The supermarket would close early. The fish smokehouse would have limited hours. The famous white sands would be magnificent and entirely empty, which is either romantic or desolate depending on your constitution and the quality of your waterproofs.

We found the extra blankets by nine o'clock. By ten, we had located the candles and lit enough of them to make the living room feel like a deliberate atmospheric choice rather than a response to the early dark. The wind had picked up, moving through the pine with that particular North Jutland sound, not angry exactly, but persistent, reminding you that the coast here has been shaped by patience as much as by drama.

I sat with my second mug of tea and watched my partner attempt to decipher the Danish television listings, and felt something shift. The mishap with the dunes, the sand in the suitcase, the realisation that our summer selves had done the packing for an autumn body, all of it settled into something like contentment. The blokhus was not trying to be anything other than what it was: a solid, seasonal place, comfortable with October, ready for whatever the next days might bring.

The radiator ticked. The candle flickered. Somewhere, the sea continued its ancient conversation with the shore. We had arrived, slightly battered, slightly ridiculous, exactly where we were meant to be.
