About Lolland
The mishap that truly crowned our arrival, though, was the key safe. The instructions said "behind the water butt." There was no water butt. There was a rainwater collection barrel, which I now understand is what sensible Danish people call such things, and it was on the opposite side of the cottage to where I had been ferreting around in a hedge like a burglar with poor planning skills. A neighbour, tending what I can only describe as an aggressively perfect vegetable patch, watched me without visible comment. I waved. She did not wave back. I found the key eventually, damp and slightly apologetic, and let us into what turned out to be the most gloriously still place I have encountered in years. The Naesby itself is a proper Danish summerhouse, all weathered wood and generous windows that let the flat Lolland light pour across the floors. The first thing I did, because I am apparently incapable of maturity, was open every door and declare each room "brilliant" while my partner located the kettle with the focused purpose of someone who has driven with me for three hours. The living area smells of pine and something else, something I eventually identified as the absence of traffic noise. There is a wood-burning stove stacked with birch logs, a sofa deep enough to lose an afternoon in, and books left by previous guests that I immediately began judging by their spines. A well-thumbed crime novel in Danish. A guide to local birds. Someone's abandoned sudoku, half-finished, which I decided was a mystery I would not solve. The garden is the sort that undoes you. Not manicured, not wild, just settled into itself. A lawn that has accepted its fate of occasional mowing, fruit trees that have clearly been producing for decades without any dramatic intervention, and a wooden table where we have taken every meal since arriving. I spent my first morning with coffee and a novel I had been meaning to read since approximately 2019, watching a blackbird work methodically through a flowerbed with the dedication of someone who also has nowhere particular to be. The afternoon became a horizontal affair on a sun lounger that creaks reassuringly when you shift position. I shifted position frequently. This was the activity. There is a village nearby, Nakskov I suppose if we wanted provisions or civilisation, but we have not wanted either with any conviction. The cottage came with bicycles, which we have used precisely once, to ride to a beach that was empty and stony and perfect for standing at the water's edge feeling smug about our excellent decision to do very little. We returned, bought bread and cheese from a supermarket whose location I could not now tell you, and settled back into our routine of garden, book, occasional nap, repeat. I had worried, before coming, that I would feel restless. That the absence of plans would itch at me, that I would need to justify the trip with experiences, with sights, with a story to tell afterwards. Instead I have found something quieter and, I think, more honest. The self-reflection came on the third evening, wine in hand, watching the light stay stubbornly present at nine o'clock, realising that my usual compulsion to fill time comes from a fear of its passing rather than any genuine appetite for busyness. Here, time passes regardless. The light changes. The blackbird returns to the same flowerbed. I turn a page, or do not. It is all still happening. We have four days left. I intend to spend at least one of them entirely in the garden, moving between sun and shade with the strategic patience of a cat, finishing my book or not finishing it, watching the fruit trees do nothing in particular with what I can only describe as professional stillness. The key safe and I have made our peace. The neighbour has still not waved, and I respect her for it. Some things do not need to be rushed, or even resolved. That, I am learning, is rather the point. |
