We collected shells the children would abandon in the car two days later. We built a sandcastle with architectural ambitions far exceeding its structural integrity. The dog, recovered from his travel sickness, galloped after seagulls with the hopeless optimism of his breed.

By day three, we had settled into a rhythm so predictable it bordered on religious. Slow breakfasts with too much cheese, arguments about whose turn it was to walk to the little local shop, afternoons of determined idleness on that wonky terrace. The children discovered the outdoor shower and treated it with the reverence usually reserved for theme park attractions. I read half a thriller and forgot the plot twice. My mother-in-law's blanket survived an emergency wash cycle and emerged, if not triumphant, then at least functional.
