About Lolland
The mishap, though. I must tell you about the mishap. Somewhere near Maribo I had convinced myself I was a brilliant navigator and could shave twenty minutes off the journey using what I called "the scenic route" and what my partner called "your usual nonsense." This involved a farm track, a very closed gate, and me reversing for nearly half a mile while a man on a tractor watched with the patient amusement of someone who has seen this exact scene play out a thousand times before. I waved. He did not wave back. Fair enough, really. By the time we reached Kramnitze, the car smelled of stress, slightly melted chocolate buttons, and whatever that smell is when you have driven too long with the heating on full blast because someone kept opening the window. The property sat there, all blonde wood and sensible Danish design, looking impossibly calm against the flat landscape. I half expected it to judge me. The key box code worked first time, which felt like a minor miracle given my recent form. The door opened with that satisfying Scandinavian clunk, and we stepped into a world of pale pine floors, enormous windows, and a kitchen so tidy it looked like it had never witnessed someone making beans on toast at midnight. I immediately felt the urge to apologise to the room for my very existence. My first proper look around revealed the sort of details that make you realise you have been doing holidays wrong your entire life. There was a proper wood-burning stove, stacked with logs like someone had been expecting us. The bedrooms had that particular stillness that only comes from being near water, even though the sea was not quite visible yet. I opened the fridge to find it empty but spotless, and found myself oddly moved by this. A blank canvas. A fresh start. A place where nobody knew about the tractor incident. The bathroom had underfloor heating, which I discovered by lying flat on the tiles for a full five minutes, making small noises of contentment. My partner suggested this was not normal behaviour for a grown man. I suggested she had clearly never driven through rural Denmark with a broken sat nav and a grudge. Stepping onto the terrace, finally, with a cup of tea that tasted of victory and mild dehydration, I could see why people come to this corner of Lolland. The land falls away so gently towards the water that you barely notice the slope until the horizon opens up. It is not dramatic, not in the way of Scottish islands or Cornish cliffs. It is something quieter, more patient. The sort of landscape that waits for you to slow down enough to notice it. I stood there, still wearing my driving shoes with the worn-down heel, and felt something shift. The chaos of the journey, the gate, the tractor man, the chocolate buttons fused to the passenger seat, all of it started to feel like the necessary price of admission. You cannot arrive somewhere this peaceful without earning it slightly. Or at least that is what I told myself. The wood burner took three attempts to light because I had forgotten that newspaper exists and tried to use a brochure about local attractions. But when it finally caught, and the room filled with that particular amber glow, I felt properly arrived. Not just geographically, though goodness knows that had been challenge enough. Something else. The kind of arrival that takes longer than a car journey. I am not sure what the next few days will hold. Walks along the shore, probably. Attempts to cook fish I am not qualified to prepare. Almost certainly another argument with the sat nav when we try to find a supermarket. But for now, sitting on that terrace with my tea going cold and the light starting to soften over the water, I am exactly where I need to be. |
