About Limfjorden
The mishap, because there is always a mishap with me, came five minutes from the property. I stopped at what I thought was the holiday home to take a photo of the fjord view. Reversed slightly to get the angle right. Straight into a wooden post that had been invisible from my mirror. The crunch was not catastrophic, but it was undeniably pathetic. I sat there for a moment, checking if anyone had witnessed this performance. A single seagull observed me with what I can only describe as professional disappointment. I drove the remaining distance with my dignity in tatters and my rear bumper making a noise I chose to ignore. The key safe was exactly where the instructions said, which felt like a small miracle given my track record. I fumbled with the code, dropped the keys, retrieved them from a flowerbed, and finally stumbled through the front door of what turned out to be a genuinely lovely wooden holiday home. The sort of place that smells immediately of pine and sea air and someone else's excellent taste in minimal Scandinavian furniture. My first impression, once I stopped panicking about the bumper, was how absurdly peaceful it was. I had expected quiet, being in rural Denmark, but this was a different category of silence. The kind that makes you aware of your own breathing. I stood in the open-plan living area, still clutching my car keys and a half-eaten packet of airport biscuits, and just listened. Somewhere in the distance, a dog barked once, seemed to think better of it, and stopped. The view from the main window stopped me properly. Limfjorden stretched out in that particular grey-blue that northern seas do so well, and I could see the shoreline curving away towards what I later learned was the local beach area. The light was doing that flat, soft thing it does at four o'clock on an overcast Danish afternoon, and everything looked slightly like a painting I was not sophisticated enough to appreciate properly. I made the rookie error of exploring the whole property before unpacking, which meant I spent twenty minutes opening cupboards, testing the shower, and becoming unreasonably excited about the dishwasher. The bedrooms were simple, clean, exactly what you want when you are still slightly vibrating from motorway driving and minor vehicular humiliation. I flopped onto the main bed and immediately felt the accumulated stress of travel begin to leak out of me. The kitchen, I noticed with relief, was actually equipped for cooking rather than the performative minimalism some holiday rentals offer. Real knives. A proper frying pan. I opened the fridge, remembered I had not stopped for groceries, and laughed at myself. There was a single bottle of water and my airport biscuits. Gourmet dining this would not be. By evening, I had found the local supermarket in Logstor, stocked up on the essentials, and returned to watch the light change over the fjord with a cup of tea that I had made using a kettle I initially could not locate. It was behind the coffee machine, obviously, because Scandinavian design loves to hide things in plain sight. I sat on the small terrace as the sky turned that particular muted pink, still thinking about the bumper, still slightly embarrassed, but already feeling the particular loosening that happens when you finally stop moving. The seagull had not followed me, or if it had, it was keeping its judgments to itself. Limfjorden lapped against the shore with the patience of water that has nowhere urgent to be. I had arrived chaotic, slightly damaged, and underprepared. But sitting there, with my terrible biscuits and my excellent view, I suspected I had got something right. |
