About Limfjorden
I have never been so relieved to see a wooden shed in my life.

The drive up through Jutland had been straightforward enough, right up until I decided my phone knew better than the printed directions. Twenty minutes of increasingly narrow Danish lanes, a tense encounter with a tractor the size of a bungalow, and one spectacularly wrong turn into what I can only describe as a cabbage field of overwhelming scale. I sat there, surrounded by brassicas, genuinely wondering if this was how I would end. Not with a bang, but with coleslaw.

By the time I found the actual turning for the Gatten, I was half an hour late, slightly hysterical, and in desperate need of whatever the Danish word for a cuppa might be. The property sat tucked among trees near Limfjorden, a proper wooden holiday home with that satisfying Scandinavian simplicity that makes you feel instantly inadequate about your own decorating choices back in Birmingham.

The key was where they said it would be. I mention this only because my track record with holiday rentals is patchy at best. There was the incident in Cornwall with the broken lockbox. The time in Norfolk with the key apparently hidden inside a fake rock that turned out to be an actual rock. But here, everything functioned as advertised, which felt almost suspicious.

Stepping inside, the first thing that struck me was the smell. That particular combination of pine, slightly aged fabric, and what I can only describe as "holiday potential." The living area opened straight onto a kitchen that was compact without being punishing, the kind of space that suggests you might actually cook something involving fish rather than just surviving on supermarket pastries. I made a mental note to visit the local harbour at Glyngore, apparently famous for its catch, though in that moment I could barely muster the energy to boil water.

The garden was where I stopped properly. A proper Danish cottage garden, not manicured to death but comfortably established, with patches of lawn and established shrubs and that particular quality of northern light that makes everything look slightly more meaningful than it deserves. A wooden terrace wrapped around the front, furnished with weathered chairs that had clearly supported generations of people doing absolutely nothing. I tested one immediately. It held. I stayed.

That first afternoon, I did not explore. I did not unpack properly. I did not even locate the nearest shop with any urgency. I simply sat with a book I had been carrying unread for six months, watched the light move across the grass, and listened to the particular silence of a place where nobody needed anything from me. A bird of some Scandinavian variety did something musical in a tree. I did not identify it. This felt like progress.

There is a particular guilt to doing nothing, I think, bred into those of us raised on productivity and modest suffering. The first hour of genuine stillness felt almost illicit, like I was getting away with something. By the second hour, I had stopped checking my phone. By the third, I had genuinely forgotten where I had put it. This might sound pathetic to the well-adjusted among you, but for someone whose default state is mild background panic, it felt like a minor miracle.

The Gatten had that quality of places designed for living rather than performing. No statement furniture demanding appreciation. No view so spectacular you feel obligated to photograph it into submission. Just comfortable spaces, practical warmth, and the implicit permission to slow down without announcing it as self-care or wellness or any of the other words we use to justify basic human rest.

I watched evening come on from that terrace chair, still in my driving clothes, still slightly smelling of cabbage field. The light went soft and golden in that prolonged northern way, and somewhere distant across Limfjorden, I could make out the low shapes of other cottages, other people presumably doing their own versions of nothing.

Tomorrow, I told myself, I might walk to the water. I might find that harbour. I might learn the Danish word for cuppa, or simply drink coffee like a functional adult. But for now, there was just this wooden chair, this particular patch of garden, and the profound, uncomplicated joy of having absolutely nowhere else to be.

I stayed there until the mosquitoes found me, which in Denmark is less a question of if than when, and even then I moved slowly, almost reluctantly, back toward the warm yellow square of the kitchen window.

The cabbage field already felt like someone else's story.
