About Langeland Tasinge
My partner, who had been admirably patient through my "scenic route" via what I am fairly certain was someone's private beet field, gave me that particular look. You know the one. The look that says "I love you, but I am also considering leaving you here to be raised by seagulls." The property itself, when we finally managed to contact the owner and get the actual code, was one of those classic Danish summer houses that seem to have grown organically from the landscape. Weathered wood, a steeply pitched roof, and windows that somehow catch the light in a way that makes everything inside look impossibly cosy. The Spodsbjerg sits on Langeland, that long thin island south of Funen, connected to the mainland by a bridge that I had crossed approximately forty minutes earlier without actually noticing. I was distracted by a large bird at the time. Possibly a heron. Possibly a plastic bag. The point is, I was not at my most observant. Stepping inside, the first thing that struck me was the smell. That particular combination of pine, old books, and something faintly maritime that makes you immediately want to put the kettle on and find a blanket. The house was bigger than it appeared from outside, with a living area that opened onto a terrace facing what I later learned was the Langelandsbaelt. At that moment, it was simply "very large body of water that I hope is meant to be there." My second impression involved the stairs. The bedroom was in a loft conversion, accessed by a ladder so steep and narrow that I felt like a mountaineer attempting something technically challenging. I made it up with my suitcase, feeling rather pleased with myself, only to discover that the ceiling sloped dramatically and I could only stand upright in the exact centre of the room. My partner, who is considerably shorter, found this hilarious. I spent the first evening developing an intimate relationship with a roof beam and a small bruise on my forehead. The kitchen, I should mention, was properly equipped in that understated Scandinavian way. Nothing flashy, everything functional, including a coffee maker that I approached with the caution of someone who has been defeated by foreign appliances before. I need not have worried. The Danes understand coffee the way the British understand queueing. It is simply in their cultural DNA. By evening, the mishaps of arrival had settled into something like contentment. We walked the short path down to the water's edge, watched the ferries passing between the islands, and I finally admitted that my "shortcut" had been neither short nor cut. The Spodsbjerg had already begun working its particular magic. There is something about these Danish coastal houses, something in their unpretentious comfort and their absolute acceptance of the weather that makes you slow down despite yourself. I stood there with a cup of properly made coffee, watching the light fade across the water, and reflected that perhaps my talent for getting lost was not entirely a character flaw. After all, we had arrived. The beet fields were behind us. And somewhere above, in that impossible loft, a low beam waited patiently for morning. |
