About Langeland Tasinge
The cottage itself appeared at the end of a gravel drive, and I will admit that my first thought was whether I had accidentally booked us into a particularly well-maintained garden shed. It was wooden, compact, and surrounded by greenery so lush it felt almost aggressive in its healthiness. I stood there with my suitcase wheel squeaking ominously, wondering if this was what Danish hygge actually looked like in summer or if I had simply lowered my expectations after six hours in a car. The key was in the lockbox, which sounds straightforward until you realise that lockbox technology and I have never been on speaking terms. I spent a good ten minutes jabbing at buttons in the drizzle, my partner making helpful observations from the safety of the car, before I discovered I had been entering the code backwards. Backwards. I am forty-two years old and apparently cannot tell left from right when under mild pressure. Stepping inside was like walking into one of those interior magazines my mother keeps in a basket in her bathroom. Everything was wood, clean lines, and that particular Scandinavian brightness that makes you immediately conscious of how much dust you probably brought with you from England. The living area opened straight into a kitchen that was simultaneously minimal and somehow contained every utensil I have ever heard of and several I had not. I picked up what I thought was a fancy cheese grater and spent an embarrassing amount of time trying to work out if it was actually a candle holder. The first thing I did, because I am a creature of habit and also quite thirsty after my navigational failures, was attempt to make a cup of tea. This is where gentle self-reflection crept in, standing in that immaculate Danish kitchen with my sad little box of Yorkshire Tea. I had spent months looking forward to this trip, imagining myself as some kind of relaxed European traveller, and yet there I was, already clinging to my home comforts before I had even unpacked. The kettle was one of those sleek electric numbers that boils water in approximately four seconds, which felt almost confrontational in its efficiency. I took my mug and stepped out onto the terrace, which overlooked nothing more dramatic than a well-kept garden and some distant trees, and felt something in my shoulders finally drop. My partner emerged from exploring the bedrooms with the news that the duvets were "suspiciously fluffy" and that there appeared to be a wood-burning stove that we definitely did not need in August but would probably become obsessed with anyway. We stood there in our socks, surrounded by the quiet of a Danish island we had never heard of six months ago, and I realised that the cows and the lockbox and the backwards postcode were already becoming the parts I would remember most fondly. By evening we had established that the local shop closed at five-thirty with what I can only describe as Scandinavian punctuality, that the beach was a ten-minute walk through lanes so picturesque they looked staged, and that I was going to spend the entire week slightly intimidated by how organised everything was. I fell asleep that first night to the sound of absolutely nothing, which was unsettling and wonderful in equal measure, already plotting how to accidentally get lost again tomorrow just for the story. |
