About Funen
The real Stokkebæk revealed itself through a tunnel of beech trees, and I will admit I may have made a small noise. Not quite a sob, but close. There it sat, a proper old timber-framed farmhouse with that weathered red-brown wood you only get from decades of standing firm against Baltic winds. The sort of place that looks like it should have its own slow television series. My wife was already out of the car before I had fully stopped, which is her way. The children were less impressed, primarily because the youngest had managed to drop her tablet down the gap between car seat and door somewhere near Middelfart and had been sulking ever since. "Look at the apple trees," I said, pointing at a small orchard heavy with fruit. "There's wifi," my wife called from the doorway, reading from the welcome folder. The child moved, suddenly interested in rural life. The key was in a lockbox, which I failed to open for eleven minutes while the family watched with the silent judgment of a jury. Turns out I had been entering the code backwards. The door swung open onto flagstone floors and that particular smell of old wood, dried lavender, and something faintly maritime that I now realise was probably just very clean air. We do not get enough of that at home. The kitchen swallowed us whole. Enormous farmhouse table, proper Aga-type situation in the corner, windows looking straight out across the garden to where the sea glinted between two dunes. My wife ran her hand along the table and said "we could have people round," which is hilarious because we know absolutely nobody within a hundred miles. Still, the fantasy held. I could see it: long lunches, wine, someone playing the guitar badly while the sun went down. The reality would involve me burning something on that Aga and everyone eating crisps in silence, but the fantasy was nice for a moment. The children discovered the loft bedroom first, which involved a ladder and immediate declarations about who would sleep where. I discovered the bathroom second, which involved a claw-foot tub positioned directly beneath a skylight and an immediate declaration that I would be having a bath that evening regardless of what anyone else needed. There were heated floors. I stood on them in my socks and felt genuinely emotional about Danish engineering. By late afternoon we had achieved that particular state of holiday chaos where bags remain half-unpacked, someone cannot find their swimming costume, and yet nobody really cares because there is a garden to explore. The Stokkebæk garden is substantial, slightly wild in the way that suggests thoughtful neglect rather than actual abandonment, and it rolls down toward a small cove that we reached through a gate in a hedge. Standing there with my shoes in my hand, watching my children poke at rock pools with the serious concentration of marine biologists, I felt something shift. The drive, the sat nav disaster, the tablet down the seat gap, all of it faded into that particular hum of contentment that only really comes from being somewhere that feels quietly, determinedly itself. We walked back up through long grass as the light turned golden, and I caught my wife's eye, and we did not say anything, which said everything. Dinner was bread and cheese and tomatoes from a farm shop we had passed, eaten at that enormous table with the windows open to the garden. The Aga remained unmastered. Nobody played the guitar. It was absolutely perfect, and I would not have changed a single thing, except perhaps my own ability to read a lockbox code correctly, which I suspect will haunt me for the entire week. |
