I have never been so relieved to see a gravel driveway in my life. After three hours of driving from Billund Airport, convinced our sat nav had developed a personal vendetta against us, we finally rolled up to Skarupore. The mishap? I had spent the final twenty minutes of the journey frantically searching for my phone, accusing the children of hiding it, only to discover I had been sitting on it the entire time. My wife found this hilarious. I did not, though I laughed later, which she has reminded me of approximately forty times since.

The cottage sits on the south coast of Funen, and my first impression was how quietly it announced itself. No grand gesture, no ostentatious anything. Just a traditional Danish holiday home with weathered wood and a roof that looked like it had seen a few proper storms and lived to tell the tale. The garden slopes gently down toward the water, and I stood there with our bags still in the car, suddenly aware that I had been holding my shoulders up near my ears for most of the drive.

Inside, the place smelled of pine and something else I could not identify but immediately liked. The living area is open and uncomplicated, with windows that actually seem designed to let you look out rather than simply admit light. My youngest made a beeline for the loft bedroom, which she declared hers by right of being fastest up the ladder. This sparked a negotiation that lasted through unpacking and well into our first cup of tea.

The kitchen became our headquarters within about half an hour. Not because it is anything fancy, but because it is the sort of space that makes you want to put the kettle on and lean against a counter while someone else tells you about their day. We had brought too much food and not enough of the right kind, which is apparently a tradition I cannot shake. My wife raised an eyebrow at the three types of mustard and single sad carrot. I raised one back and started a list for the local shop in Skarup, which we would visit the next morning.

What struck me most that first evening was the particular quality of the light. The cottage faces west across the water, and as the sun dropped, everything seemed to slow down in a way that felt almost theatrical. The children, who had been bickering about loft territory, went quiet on the terrace. Even my phone-obsessed teenager looked up. I found myself thinking about how rarely we arrive anywhere without already planning to leave, how my shoulders had finally dropped to their proper position, and how sitting on my phone might have been the most useful thing I did all day.

We barbecued badly that night, because enthusiasm always outpaces skill on holiday. The sausages were questionable, the conversation was not. My youngest fell asleep at the table, which she has not done since she was small. I carried her up the ladder, which she would have objected to had she been awake.

That was our arrival. No drama beyond my own making, no revelations except the quiet sort that sneak up on you. Just a family of four in a wooden cottage by Danish water, slightly sunburned already, slightly hopeless at cooking over charcoal, and entirely content to be exactly where we were.
