About Funen
When I did finally locate the actual Langoe Strand, I practically wept with gratitude. The cottage sat there looking impossibly Danish, all pale wood and sensible windows, with the sort of understated garden that suggested someone had spent years getting the grasses exactly right. I stumbled out of the car, legs numb, and immediately tripped over my own wheelie case. The handle snapped clean off. I stood there in the gravel, clutching my broken luggage like a man who had just lost a dear friend, and laughed until my ribs hurt. Some holidays announce themselves with champagne sunsets. Mine announced itself with a plastic handle and cow manure still on my shoes. The first thing you notice about this corner of Funen is the quiet. Not the awkward, oppressive quiet of an empty house, but the generous, wrapping sort of quiet that makes you realise how much noise you normally carry around in your own head. I dumped my belongings in a heap by the door and walked straight through to the back garden. The grass needed mowing, which I found oddly comforting. A proper garden, not a show garden. There was a weathered wooden table, two chairs that looked like they had hosted decades of morning coffees, and beyond them a glimpse of water through the trees. I sat down without meaning to. Just sat. A blackbird landed on the fence post, sized me up, and decided I was too pathetic to bother with. I had brought three books, which now seems like comical optimism. I read perhaps six pages of the first one that entire afternoon. The garden kept interrupting. A bumblebee the size of a small aircraft investigated my shoe. Clouds moved across the sky with theatrical slowness. Somewhere distant, a dog barked once, considered its options, and apparently went back to sleep. I found myself doing that thing I always promise to do on holiday and never actually manage: absolutely nothing at all. The cottage itself encouraged this laziness. It had the comfortable, slightly worn feel of a place that has absorbed years of proper relaxation. The kitchen window framed the garden like a painting somebody had hung specifically for washing-up contemplation. The sitting room had that particular dimness that makes afternoon naps feel not just permitted but medically necessary. I kept discovering small details: a jar of beachcombed stones on the windowsill, a bookshelf with titles in three languages, a deckchair in the garden with faded stripes that matched nothing and suited everything. By evening I had not unpacked, had not planned any excursions, had not even checked what might lie beyond the immediate lane. I made a terrible cup of tea with Danish teabags that tasted faintly of liquorice, carried it outside, and watched the light change over the water. My broken wheelie case sat in the hallway like a modern art installation. My phone remained in my pocket, unconsulted, unnecessary. I came to Funen with a list, because I always come everywhere with a list. Castles to visit, harbours to photograph, local dishes to dutifully sample. The list stayed in my bag. The next morning I woke without an alarm, made coffee in my pyjamas, and spent forty minutes watching a spider reconstruct its web between two lavender bushes. It was the most productive thing I did all day. I have no photographs to show for it, no stories of charming local encounters, no recommendations for must-see attractions within easy driving distance. I have only the memory of sunlight on weathered wood, the particular green of that overgrown lawn, and the slow, unfamiliar pleasure of discovering that doing nothing at all can feel like arriving exactly where you needed to be. |
