About Funen
We were bound for Bro Strand on Funen's southern coast, a modest cluster of holiday homes perched between rolling farmland and the sort of calm, grey-blue sea that makes you want to put the kettle on. The property sat down a sandy track lined with wind-sculpted pines, the kind that lean permanently inland like they're trying to get away from something. Our cottage was the red wooden one with white trim, exactly as advertised, which came as a genuine relief given my track record with online bookings. The key was in a lockbox. I knew this. I'd read the email. What I hadn't accounted for was my own ability to transpose two digits when tired, leading to three minutes of increasingly desperate button-pushing while my children asked from the car whether we were now homeless. The code worked on attempt seven. I did not mention the earlier failures. Some truths belong only to the pine trees. Stepping inside, that particular hush of a Scandinavian holiday home settled over us immediately - all pale wood, practical furniture, and the faint smell of someone's grandmother's summer. The living area opened onto a small deck through sliding doors that my son immediately tested for structural integrity. They held, barely. The kitchen was compact but sensibly arranged, unlike our own at home which appears to have been designed by someone who has never actually prepared food. I made tea with the provided kettle while my wife investigated the bedrooms. Her report was favourable: clean, simply furnished, with that particular Danish talent for making a small space feel uncluttered. The children had already claimed the twin room, leaving us the double with its view across the dunes. I stood there with my mug, watching a fishing boat creep along the horizon, and felt something in my shoulders drop that I hadn't realised I'd been holding. The mishap came when I attempted the outdoor shower. There's something about Danish holiday homes and their enthusiasm for al fresco washing that appeals to my romantic sensibilities while completely ignoring my actual tolerance for cold water. I turned the tap confidently, having misread the instructions, and received a blast of North Sea-temperature spray that sent me yelping back onto the deck in my pants. My daughter filmed it. My wife laughed for approximately forty minutes. I dried off and pretended this was exactly the refreshing experience I'd intended. By evening we'd walked the beach, collected shells of questionable quality, and established that the local shop sold something called "pålægschokolade" which the children insisted was breakfast food. We ate simple pasta on the deck as the light stretched long across the water, that particular northern softness that makes nine o'clock feel like late afternoon. The children squabbled gently over who had the better shell. My wife poured wine into plastic cups. I watched a hare lope across the dunes behind us, unbothered by our presence. I thought about the wrong turns and the lockbox panic and the shower incident, and how these small humiliations somehow become the stories you keep. The cottage creaked in the cooling air. Somewhere, a neighbour started a barbecue. We had nothing planned for tomorrow beyond more of this same slow rhythm, and I found I couldn't remember the last time that felt like enough. |
