About Funen
I have never been so grateful for heated seats in my life. The ferry from Puttgarden to Rodby had been rougher than expected, and by the time I crawled off and pointed my hire car toward Funen, I was already questioning every life choice that had led me to a February minibreak in Denmark. The windscreen wipers worked overtime as I crossed the Great Belt Bridge, the grey water below matching the sky above in what felt like a personal attack on my mood.

The sat-nav announced my arrival at Baring Vig with cheerful indifference to the fact I had just driven past the turning twice. The gravel track was slick with rain, and my little VW Polo performed an unplanned pirouette that deposited me at a jaunty angle across two parking spaces. A woman walking her dog observed this with the polite neutrality that Scandinavians have perfected. I waved with desperate enthusiasm. She nodded, once, and continued into the mist.

The property sat low against the landscape, timber-clad and modest, with windows that glowed amber against the afternoon gloom. February light dies early in Denmark, and what little remained had that particular quality of being present without actually illuminating anything. I gathered my bags and trudged through wet grass that soaked my trainers within seconds. Note to self: waterproof footwear exists for reasons.

The key was exactly where the email had promised, in a little box that required the dexterity of a surgeon to open with frozen fingers. The door stuck, then gave way with a sigh, and I tumbled into warmth and the smell of pine. The underfloor heating, I later discovered, was the true hero of this holiday. I stood there in my dripping coat, dripping onto the wooden floor, dripping generally, and felt something in my chest unclench.

The living area opened toward the water, though "water" was generous for what I could actually see. The Baring Vig itself was out there somewhere, beyond a strip of brown reeds and a beach that looked less inviting than a dentist's waiting room. In summer, I imagined, those windows framed sailboats and swimmers and the particular joy of Danish coastal life. In February, they framed atmosphere. Thick, grey, determined atmosphere.

I made tea with the efficiency of someone who has been cold for six hours. The kitchen was compact, everything within reach, clearly designed by someone who had actually cooked in small spaces rather than merely posed in them for photographs. I found a packet of biscuits I did not remember packing. Travel magic.

The bedroom was simple, two singles pushed together in that practical Danish way, with duvets rather than sheets and blankets. I appreciated this immediately. There is something deeply civilised about being able to cocoon oneself entirely. The bathroom was warm, the shower powerful, and I stood under it until the hot water threatened to run out, watching the steam curl toward the little window.

Evening arrived without my noticing, the grey simply deepening until I needed lamps. I built a fire in the wood-burning stove with the enthusiasm of a child and the competence of someone who has watched too many films and attended too few scout meetings. It caught, eventually, and I sat cross-legged on the rug like a meditation I had not planned, watching flames dance against the black window.

The season had stripped everything back. No leaves on the trees, no boats on the water, no tourists posing for photographs. Just the essential shape of the place, the bones of the landscape, the quiet that comes when the world has decided to stay indoors. I felt briefly sorry for myself, then briefly wise, then settled for being warm and present and slightly damp still from my earlier misadventures.

I fell asleep to the sound of wind against timber, the stove ticking as it cooled, and woke to darkness that would not lift for hours yet. February in Funen asks nothing of you but patience. I was beginning to understand what it might offer in return.
