About Funen
The mishap, though. I must tell you about the mishap. We had stopped at a supermarket in Assens to stock up, as one does, and I had proudly purchased what I believed to be a lovely bottle of local apple juice. Celebratory glug for arrival, I thought. Danish orchards, very pastoral, very hygge. It was only when I unscrewed the cap in the car park of the holiday home, took an enormous swig, and felt my throat catch fire that I realised my error. Cider. Nine percent cider. I had essentially bought a pint of farmhouse scrumpy and treated it like a breakfast beverage. Dave found this hilarious until he remembered I was the one driving the last stretch down the gravel track. The track, incidentally, was where the real character of the place announced itself. Bøjden sits on the southern tip of Funen, looking across the Little Belt towards Als, and the approach to our little wooden house felt properly rural. Not chocolate-box rural. Actual rural. Potholes that could swallow a wheelie bin. A smell of sea air mixed with something agricultural that I chose not to identify too closely. Gulls having what sounded like a very heated meeting overhead. The house itself was a modest, traditional Danish summer place - weathered wood, slightly wonky decking, that particular Scandinavian ability to look both humble and somehow exactly right in its setting. I fumbled with the key box, still slightly rattled by my cider incident, and managed to drop the code sheet into a puddle. Dave retrieved it with the weary patience of a man who has seen me do worse. Stepping inside, that first impression was pure, uncomplicated relief. After the drive, the wrong turns, the accidental day-drinking, the puddle - here was warmth, simplicity, and a view through the window that actually made me stop mid-complaint. The Little Belt stretched out grey-blue and calm, with the distant shape of Als on the horizon. The house was clean, uncluttered, with that particular Danish talent for making a small space feel generous. Wooden floors, simple furniture, a kitchen that looked like someone actually cooks in it rather than just photographs it for a catalogue. I stood there in my still-damp shoes, clutching my bag of actual apple juice this time, and felt that particular holiday sensation of all your travel tension draining away in about thirty seconds. The gulls were still arguing outside. The gravel track had nearly destroyed our suspension. I had briefly considered whether Danish cider counted as drunk driving. But the light on that water, and the quiet, and the sense that absolutely nobody needed anything from us for a solid week - that was the first real impression. Not the journey, not my own incompetence, not even the lovely simplicity of the house itself. It was the stillness. The particular stillness of a place that knows exactly what it is and does not need to explain itself. I poured myself a proper drink - water, very boring, very necessary - and stepped onto that slightly wonky decking to watch the light change. Dave joined me, still smirking about the cider. "Nice spot," he said. "Shut up," I said, very happily. |
