About Falster
The mishap, though. I need to tell you about the mishap. We'd stopped at a supermarket in Nykobing Falster for supplies, as you do when self-catering looms and you remember you can't cook. I was feeling terribly organised, loading up on Danish bacon and something called "pålægschokolade" that I didn't understand but felt spiritually drawn to. Back at the car, smug with my provisions, I managed to drop the entire bag of eggs onto the gravel. Every single one. Just smashed into a sad yellow puddle while a Danish pensioner watched from her bicycle with the kind of silent judgment only Scandinavians can really pull off. I stood there holding the empty carton like it might somehow explain itself. My partner, ever helpful, simply said "well" in that particular tone of voice, and we drove the last few miles in egg-scented silence. The property itself appeared through the pine trees like something from a brochure I'd normally distrust. Whitewashed walls, thatched roof, proper Danish summerhouse territory. I half expected to find it was a cardboard facade and we'd actually booked a shed. But no, the key code worked first time, which genuinely shocked me given my recent run of luck. Stepping inside, the smell of pine and something faintly vanilla hit me immediately. The place had that particular stillness of somewhere recently cleaned and waiting. Wooden floors, white walls, those big windows that Scandinavians seem to understand better than the rest of us. I made straight for the kitchen to investigate the damage to my culinary plans, and found it gleaming with actual space to move around, which immediately made me feel guilty about my intentions to mostly eat bread and cheese for a week. The living area opened onto a terrace through sliding doors, and I stepped out still wearing my shoes from the egg incident, trailing a bit of gravel with me. The garden sloped down toward nothing particularly dramatic, just Danish countryside being quietly beautiful in that understated way. Pines everywhere. A proper outdoor dining set that I knew immediately we'd use twice maximum before retreating to the sofa. I found myself standing there, slightly smelling of broken eggs, suddenly aware of how tightly I'd been holding myself during the drive. The mishap had punctured something, I think. All that tension about getting there, about whether the place would match the photos, about whether I'd remember how to properly relax. The broken eggs were ridiculous, obviously, but they'd forced a kind of surrender. Here I was, imperfect and slightly messy, in a place that felt surprisingly forgiving about such things. My partner appeared with two cups of tea made from the emergency supplies we'd actually managed not to destroy. We sat on that terrace as the afternoon light did something golden through the pines, and I thought about how I'd worried needlessly about the journey, the booking, the whole enterprise. The cows were behind me now. The eggs were behind me. Marielyst was waiting, and I was finally, properly, arrived. |
