About Falster
We were bound for Marielyst, a holiday home I had booked in a flurry of optimism weeks earlier. The NOVASOL listing had promised a "cosy cottage near the beach," which in my mind translated to something between a fairytale cabin and a design magazine spread. Reality, as it so often does, arrived with its own agenda. The first thing I noticed upon arrival was the smell. Not the sea breeze I had imagined, but something earthier, greener, more alive. The cottage sat tucked among pine trees at the end of a sandy track, and I immediately walked straight into a low-hanging branch while fetching our bags. My partner laughed for the first time since the tractor. I counted it as progress. The key was in a lockbox, which I fumbled with for an embarrassing length of time, convinced I had the wrong code. When it finally clicked open, I felt a surge of triumph entirely disproportionate to the achievement. The door swung wide and there it was: a compact wooden interior that smelled of resin and previous summers. A small kitchen with orange cupboards that should have been awful but somehow worked. A living room with windows looking directly into the pines, as if the forest had been arranged for our private viewing. I had planned to head straight to Marielyst Beach, that famous stretch of white sand everyone mentions. Instead, exhausted and slightly disoriented, we decided to explore on foot. This is where the holiday properly began, though I did not know it yet. We wandered down an unmarked path behind the cottage, assuming it would loop back to the road. It did not. It led us through dense pine woodland where the light fell in thin columns and the silence was so complete I could hear my own heartbeat. The path narrowed, then seemed to disappear entirely into a carpet of brown needles. We were, by any reasonable definition, lost. My phone had no signal. Of course it did not. This was precisely the sort of situation my mother warned me about, the reason she still packs a physical map for trips to the supermarket. I felt the familiar tightening of anxiety, the urge to retrace steps, to control the situation. Then my partner pointed. Through the trees, barely visible, a flash of water. We pushed forward, branches catching at our sleeves, and emerged onto a small clearing where a narrow lake sat perfectly still, surrounded by reeds. No sign, no path, no other people. Just water and sky and the distant sound of what I later learned was a marsh warbler, though at the time I simply thought: bird, probably not dangerous. We sat on a fallen log. I do not know how long. Long enough for the panic to drain out through my feet into the Danish earth. The lake was not on any map I had studied. It had no name that I know of still. We found it because I took a wrong turn, because I refused the sat nav, because I walked into a branch and needed to sit down and recover my dignity. That evening, back at the cottage, I cooked a terrible meal with unfamiliar Danish ingredients. The smoke alarm went off. We opened all the windows and ate with blankets around our shoulders, watching the darkness gather between the pines. My partner said it was the best holiday meal she had ever had. She was lying, obviously, but the kind of lie that feels like love. I had come to Marielyst chasing beaches and sunshine and the Denmark of tourist brochures. Instead I found a nameless lake, a bruise from a pine branch, and the particular peace of being somewhere no one had told me to go. The next day we would find the proper beach, and it would be lovely, and we would swim in water so cold it stole my breath. But that first evening, lost and slightly smoky and utterly content, was the moment the holiday truly began. Some wrong turns, I am learning, are exactly right. |
