About East Jutland
I have never been brilliant at following sat nav instructions, and my journey to Saksild Strand proved this beyond all doubt. Somewhere around Aarhus I managed to interpret "keep right" as "make an ambitious left through what turned out to be a private farmyard." The farmer, bless him, simply leaned on his gate and watched with the weary patience of a man who has seen many idiots in hire cars. I gave him a cheerful wave that I hoped conveyed both apology and shared amusement at life's little absurdities. He did not wave back.

By the time I actually found the cottage, I was in that peculiar state of mild hysteria that follows minor travel chaos. But then I opened the car door and heard the sea. Not dramatic crashing waves, just a gentle, rhythmic presence somewhere beyond the dunes. The sort of sound that makes your shoulders drop before you have consciously decided to relax.

The cottage itself sat among low coastal vegetation, painted that particular Danish shade of weathered red that looks as though it has earned its colour through decades of salt air and sensible maintenance. A small wooden deck wrapped around two sides, and someone, presumably the owners, had left a pot of lavender looking appropriately scruffy and unbothered by my arrival. I liked it immediately.

My first job, after dragging in an embarrassing quantity of luggage, was to make coffee and locate the garden. This took longer than necessary because I kept getting distracted by windows. Each one framed something worth pausing for: the deck chairs arranged at a slight angle to each other, as if mid-conversation; a patch of wild strawberries colonising the edge of the gravel path; the way afternoon light fell across the kitchen table in a manner that suggested serious loafing potential.

The garden proved to be enclosed enough to feel private without being fussy about it. A hammock hung between two trees with the optimistic slack of something waiting to be tested. I tested it. The hammock won, folding around me in a gentle embrace that made standing up seem actively foolish. I stayed there until the coffee went cold, watching a single cloud perform an exceptionally slow crossing of the sky.

I had brought three books with the ambitious intention of "getting through them." This phrase now seems absurd. I read perhaps six pages of the first one, then found myself studying a beetle's progress across a paving stone with genuine interest. There is something about this particular stretch of East Jutland coast that recalibrates your sense of what deserves attention. The beetle was doing excellent work. I felt it deserved witness.

The afternoon drifted into evening without any meaningful intervention from me. I moved from hammock to deck chair to kitchen and back again, each transition feeling like sufficient activity for several hours. At one point I considered a walk to the beach, which lay perhaps five minutes away through soft sand paths. I did not go. The consideration itself felt adequately adventurous.

What I am slowly learning, and what Saksild Strand taught me with particular gentleness, is that doing very little requires its own kind of courage. The world tells us to maximise, to experience, to tick boxes. The hammock tells us something else entirely. I am trying to listen more carefully to hammocks.

By my second morning, I had established a rigorous routine of morning coffee on the deck, mid-morning relocation to the garden bench, and afternoon hammock occupancy with occasional reading. The books remained largely unopened. The beetle, I noted with satisfaction, continued its patrol.

I have returned home with sand in my shoes, a slight sunburn in that awkward spot where I missed with the cream, and a renewed conviction that the best holidays leave you with very little to report and absolutely no regrets.
